Lynn Leads Bernstorff In Carlin Practice Session 1-2

Carlin’s Alex Lynn has dominated this afternoon’s GP3 Series 45 minute practice session at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The British racer was an early pacesetter to place his car at the top of the time sheets – a position he would remain in until the very end with little competition from anyone else. Behind him, team mate Emil Bernstorff set the second fastest time of the session confirming a Carlin one-two. Luis sa Silva spent his session getting used to the Austrian track, where the GP3 Series are making their race debut this weekend, he ended the session in 18th overall.

Despite varying weather throughout the course of the day it was a dry as the GP3 cars took to the track. As anticipated all cars made their way out of the pit lane immediately in an effort to get to know the new circuit on the 2014 calendar and from the start it was Lynn who was the pace setter. The Red Bull Junior made himself well and truly at home at the aptly named circuit and placed his car at the top of the time sheets and remained there.

Over the next few laps Bernstorff began to progress through the field and had moved up to a strong third position overall while Sa Silva was running in 18th. However all the cars were soon brought into the pit lane following a crash at the final corner for Rene De Beer. The time continued to countdown while the stricken car was removed with Lynn still at the very top.

With the cars once again free to retake to the circuit Lynn continued to show his dominance and repeatedly set faster lap times – only once briefly was he disposed from his position by Richie Stanaway. Back on top Lynn continued with his laps as Bernstorff once again started his push.

Bernstorff soon had climbed up to fourth position and then in the final minutes had set a fantastic lap to place him behind his team mate in second. The Carlin men couldn’t be touched and ended the session in a strong one-two. Sa Silva meanwhile had moved up into the top ten after the red flag period and was continuing to set personal best lap times however as the final few minutes became more frantic he fell somewhat down the order to 18th.

Reflecting on practice Lynn said, ‘The car was really nice to drive throughout the session and it’s a testament to the team that we were quickest today and that Emil was up there with me. The track was consistent and meant that we were able to work through everything that we needed to in preparation for qualifying tomorrow. I’m feeling happy with our performance and feel confident.’

Bernstorff added, ‘It’s great to be back in the car again after such a long break and even better to have a strong session. From my point of view I was just completing my programme and the laps I set were good so that’s a bonus. To have me and Alex in the top two is great for the team and now we look to take this in to tomorrow.’

The Carlin team will be back out on track for qualifying tomorrow morning at 09.45 local time.
