Status GP Red Bull Ring GP3 Free Practice Report

Status Grand Prix’s Nick Yelloly went third fastest in the free practice session for this weekend’s GP3 Series round supporting the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.

The Friday afternoon session was the first time GP3 cars have ever run at the track – 2014 marks the return of the Austrian Grand Prix after a 10-year gap.

Having run in the top three early on, Englishman Yelloly leapt up the order to second with a few minutes remaining, setting the overall fastest time in the third sector to that point, only to be demoted to third by less than a hundredth of a second on the final lap of the session.

Status GP’s young Mexican Alfonso Celis Jr put in his best performance to date in GP3. Like his team-mates he started the session on hard-compound tyres carried over from the Circuit de Catalunya race weekend, but once he put on the soft rubber mandated for this weekend the 17-year-old rookie vaulted to ninth position in the closing minutes.

New Zealander Richie Stanaway, who lies second in the points after the opening round supporting the Spanish Grand Prix, briefly put his Status GP car at the top of the times early in the session. He was third heading into the final 10 minutes, but did not set a time on new Pirelli P Zero tyres, and dropped to 16th as others improved on fresh rubber.

Qualifying takes place on Saturday morning at 0945, with race one later in the day at 1720 and then race two on Sunday morning at 0925.

Driver quotes:

Nick Yelloly
"P3 is certainly not the end of the world. We've got some areas where I need to improve - a few corners I didn't do very well on my best lap - and we should close the gap. I was very strong in the fast corners at the end of the lap, so now we just need to improve the balance in low-speed corners. I've got data from my team-mates that will help and with adjustments to the car we'll be looking in good shape going into qualifying tomorrow morning."

Alfonso Celis Jr
"I'm happy with how the day went, if not completely satisfied. The improvements were showing up and we're making progress all the time. It's always good to make steps forward - we've still got work to do but we're going in the right direction. It's good to know what I've got to do in qualifying."

Richie Stanaway
"The car was in the window of what we needed and we were among the quickest when I was on the track. The pace was good throughout the session - I was always in the top four or so. I didn't do a time on new tyres but I'm happy with where we are and I think we can do a good job in qualifying."
