2014 NHRA: Brown Grabs Provisional Pole In Matco Tools Dragster For DSR, Johnson Continues Hot Streak With Make-A-Wish Funny Car In Epping

On Friday night under the lights the Matco Tools team clocked a track record 3.770-second lap at 323.58 mph to earn the provisional pole at the second annual New England Nationals.

"After the first session the track definitely had some teeth in it," Brown said. "We definitely wanted to run lower than a .77 but the track was so good it sucked some of the tune-up out of the race car on the starting line.

"Brian and Mark gave it that one-two power punch and it definitely picked up down track and made up some numbers. It still feels good to sneak out with that number one spot.

"It was incredible out there. Hopefully we get another session like that tomorrow where we can get another lick at it."

Spencer Massey's Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher dragster sits sixth and U.S. Army's Tony Schumacher shook the tires and is tenth after day one at New England Dragway.

In the Funny Car category DSR's Tommy Johnson Jr., the most recent NHRA Funny Car winner, continued his success in the Make-A-Wish Funny Car by leading the DSR Funny Car quad in the provisional No. 4 qualifying spot with a 4.033-second lap at 318 mph in the second qualifying session at the New Hampshire track.

Jack Beckman sits sixth in the Valvoline MaxLife Dodge Charger R/T while DSR's Matt Hagan in the Mopar Express Lane Funny Car and Ron Capps' NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car overpowered the track and sit seventh and ninth, respectively.

Two more qualifying sessions remain on Saturday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. ET before the fields are set for Sunday's championship eliminations at the New England Nationals.
