2014 NHRA: Unbeatable First Day Of Qualifying In Epping Has Arana Sitting No 1

With high expectations heading into Epping, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana Jr. not only captured the top spot in qualifying but also set a new track record at the Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals Friday at New England Dragway.

Arana and his Lucas Oil Buell rocketed down the dragstrip through both qualifying sessions, but it was his fast pass of 6.802 seconds at 195.05 mph in Q2 that earned him the top spot.

"This Lucas Oil Buell has been really consistent and really fast," Arana said. "Surprisingly based on conditions, the Harleys slowed down. We didn't though; we stayed with the pace we had in Englishtown and we are continuing to build off of that.

"Everything mechanically is running pretty much identical. We've only had to make a few changes but not to the motor because it's running well. This motor is really happy right now, and hopefully she will stay like that for a while."

Confidence is running high in the Arana Racing pit after fighting minor technical issues all season, including crank issues, which seem to have been fixed now. But aside from that, the team assurance seems to have returned.

"Right now we're struggling to find good cranks and they're working on fixing that issue," Arana said. "It's kind of a hit or miss if you get a good crank or not. I feel like I've won the crank lottery and got a good one. We had a pile of five cranks at the shop and I just happened to pick the one off the top."

Arana will look to keep his place on top of the leaderboard when qualifying continues Saturday at 12:15 and 2:45 p.m. Eliminations will start at noon, Sunday, with both qualifying and elimination action broadcast on ESPN2.
