2014 Sonoma: Ford NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Quotes

CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion - "That was fun. This is about the guy who makes the least mistakes and I made a couple too many at the beginning and then fortunately got a really good lap to get into the second round and then our lap was good. There are things I could do better, but I wouldn’t trade it because that was the fastest lap we ran. It was fun."

THOUGHTS ON TOMORROW? "Being up front will make it easier to do it on two stops because, hopefully, we’ll be able to keep good track position. We’ve got a very fast race car in race trim, so it could be really fun. You’ve got to start up front to get the whole plan in motion, so this is big for us."

HOW MUCH WILL IT HELP HAVING THE EXPERIENCE OF JIMMY FENNIG ON THE BOX TOMORROW? "He’s really good. He’s a stone cold decision-maker who can just make the decisions and stick with them."

JOEY LOGANO - No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion - "I’ve probably won more first rounds than anybody and only have one pole, so I don’t know what the deal is there. We should bring back the old qualifying because if it was the first round I’d be in a lot better shape right now. I obviously had a good first round and was the fastest car there, but in the second round I went up the hill and starting going through one and the car was freer, so I thought, ‘OK, I can haul the mail up this corner pretty good,’ and as soon as it compressed I lost the nose and missed the inside of that corner, which makes the next corner sharper, so I lost quite a bit there. And then I just lacked some overall grip in four compared to the run before, so that’s pretty much where I lost all of it. I felt I pretty much maintained through the rest of it, but at that point you’re just on damage control and ended up ninth. It’s just a bummer. Ninth is about where we were in practice, but when you win the first session all of a sudden you think you can go for the pole and I just overdrove it."

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. - No. 17 EcoPower Ford Fusion - "It wasn’t too bad. I missed a couple marks there on our second run. I did not think it was going to be faster, which it was, so it made me really wish I had hit my marks like I needed to to make a good lap. I thought our first lap wasn’t too bad, but just getting experience. It’s a lot of fun learning and just trying to get better and better."

ARIC ALMIROLA - No. 43 Nathan’s Ford Fusion - ‘It was OK. I’m not a road racer by any stretch of the imagination, so it’s not my strong suit to come out here and have a shot at the pole, we know that, but I thought our car had a fair amount of grip. On our first run out I just didn’t do a very good job of maximizing that and on our second run we got a lot closer and a lot better, but we’re just struggling with our setup a little bit. We’re really close to our teammate, Marcos, and we all know what a good road course racer he is and he’s not very happy, either. We’ve got to go back and look at that and maybe come back with a different plan tomorrow."

DAVID GILLILAND - No. 38 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Fusion - "I

think we still have high hopes for tomorrow. Our car is really good, but we just didn’t quite have the rear grip we anticipated. We made a rear spring change for qualifying anticipating it would be a little cooler this morning and for having a little more grip and it did, so we missed it a little bit but I feel really good about our car. Our car had awesome speed in race trim and I feel really good about tomorrow. It’s always good to be out here racing in California."

GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 3M Ford Fusion - "To

be perfectly honest with you we were much better than that because I skidded the tires getting into turn four and couldn’t recover from that. I came back and the times are within a tenth, which would have put me in the top 12. I lost way more than a tenth and I actually thought the lap was slower than my first lap and it was three-quarters of a second faster, so I know how much time I lost and that tells me I’ve got a pretty good car. If that wouldn’t have happened, we might have been top five going into the final session." YOUR STRATEGY FOR TOMORROW? "I

think you kind of think in your head two stops, possibly three, but it depends on how the race falls and then you kind of let it unfold. I just try to drive as smart as I can and take care of my stuff, save fuel and make passes when I can and then they tell me what to do."
