2014 NHRA: Ron Capps NHRA New England Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 10

A veteran driver like Ron Capps knows the importance of momentum in the sport of NHRA Mello Yello drag racing. And the 41-time NHRA winner is looking to start a summer hot streak on Sunday at New England Dragway.

A day after celebrating his birthday, the popular racer drove his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T to the No. 10 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at New England Dragway with a qualifying-best lap of 4.102-seconds.

Capps entered the 11th race on the 2014 NHRA schedule just 69 points behind second-place racer John Force. And the NAPA AUTO PARTS team knows that one strong race day performance can vault them near the top of the order after watching DSR teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. move from seventh to third after winning last Sunday at Bristol, Tenn.

"These four race swings are so very important because momentum is everything, you want to have it," Capps said after qualifying Saturday at New England Dragway. "If you do well, you can jump four or five spots because this class is so competitive. Even if you're fourth or fifth, you can still fall out of the top ten with a couple bad races and we want to avoid that."

Capps, who has 11 round wins to his credit this season, has had the NAPA Know How at the starting line in 2014. He has left before his opponent nearly 74-percent of the time in 21 laps this year. And with Rahn Tobler and two trailers full of Carlyle Tools in his corner, Capps is poised for a charge to top of the NHRA points standings.

"That's why I feel so good about (Rahn) Tobler and this team we have," Capps said. "We did stumble a little bit a Bristol last week on Sunday because we felt we had the best race car there during qualifying. We're going to run in some adverse conditions over the next few races and I feel really good about our chances to win some rounds and move back up in the points."

The following are Capps' qualifying results and other notes for the NHRA New England Nationals:

No. 1 Qualifier: Robert Hight (John Force Racing) 3.988 sec.*, 321.58 mph (*track record)

Qualifying Position: No. 10
First round opponent: Tim Wilkerson (No. 7)
FRIDAY: 4.102 sec., (no speed due to timer malfunction) (Session 1), 7.585, 77.81 (Session 2)
SATURDAY: 4.113, 308.92 (Session 3), 6.742, 199.11 (Session 4)
