2014 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA New England Nationals Event Recap: First Round

Jack Beckman is a firm believer that there are no moral victories in NHRA Mello Yello Series drag racing.

After a solid qualifying outing a New England Dragway in which the Valvoline MaxLife Dodge Charger R/T made three full laps and earned the No. 6 qualifying position, Beckman was hopeful for win lights on race day.

Unfortunately for Beckman and company, the Valvoline team was on the short end of a very close drag race to 2011 NHRA Top Fuel world champion Del Worsham.

"We just didn't get it done," Beckman said of the team's opening round loss. "Del (Worsham) was in deep, so they probably ran a 4.09 and we just got outrun. The car didn't accelerate in the middle of the race track and that's the risk you take running on a sunny race track. If you go up there aggressive you risk the chance of smoking the tires, and if you back it down a little bit, you risk getting outran. That's what happened to us."

Worsham's lap of 4.127-seconds edged Beckman's time of 4.123-seconds. In the books it goes down as a holeshot loss, but Worsham deep staged, helping his reaction time and hurting the elapsed time on the DHL flopper. Beckman's DSR teammate Matt Hagan, the 2011 NHRA Funny Car champion, also suffered the same fate in Sunday's opening round at the second annual Epping, NH race.

"There's no silver lining here," Beckman said. "These close loses are still loses for us and we've got to turn this thing around. We've got the parts and people. We can't depend on luck. We have to outrun people in the other lane and we've got to start soon. We're running out of races and we need to get back into the top 10 and right now."

Right now starts next Friday in Joliet, Ill. for Beckman and the Valvoline MaxLife team. And Beckman would like nothing more than to celebrate his birthday weekend with a few win lights next Sunday.

The following are Beckman's eliminations results and other notes from the NHRA New England Nationals:
