2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA New England Nationals Event Recap: Second Round

Spencer Massey had to find the silver lining after a second round loss in Sunday's NHRA New England Nationals championship eliminations.

The day started on a high after an opening round win over defending series champion Shawn Langdon and the always tough Al-Anabi Racing team. Massey's 10,000-horsepower dragster dropped a cylinder and shredded the blower belt but turned on the opening-round win light with a 3.968-second lap after Langdon's rail hazed the tires.

"That was our worst lap of the weekend but we managed to hold on for that win light and I was breathing a sigh of relief," Massey said after the first round.

Massey was then paired against rookie Richie Crampton. The driver of the Battery Extender dragster was uncharacteristically late on his reaction time with a .088 of-a-second reaction time. Massey has a .750 leave first percentage this season.

The Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara tuned machine clocked an impressive 3.794-second lap at 323 mph but Crampton left the starting line first and turned on the win light with slower 3.800-second lap.

"The car ran well, the driver did not perform well," Massey said. "I don't ever like losing on holeshots, being left on and that's what happened."

But Massey remained pleased with his team that has two event titles to date in the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello series and remains fourth in the standings.

"This car is a hot rod again," Massey said of his quickly consistent race car. "It's our normal Todd Okuhara, Phil Shuler dragster. It's going down the track and putting up good numbers and big speed. We set the track speed record this weekend.

"I can't wait to get after it again and lucky for us we don't have to wait long."

The series travels to Joliet, Ill., June 27-29, for the NHRA Route 66 Nationals. Massey earned his first career NHRA Top Fuel win at Joliet in 2009.

The following are Massey's eliminations results and other notes from the NHRA New England Nationals:
