FIA Formula 3 European Championship
Hat-trick for Verstappen: youngster unbeatable in Spa

Bookmark and Share
Three races, three wins: 16-year-old Max Verstappen (NL) completed a flawless hat-trick in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. The son of ex-Formula One driver Jos Verstappen was instrumental in the best race weekend of the season so far for the drivers with Volkswagen engines. Starting from second on the grid, Verstappen came home 0.817 seconds ahead of Lucas Auer (A) in the opening race. Jake Dennis (GB) of the Carlin team finished third to claim another podium for Volkswagen, with Tom Blomqvist (GB) fourth. Race two was once again won by Verstappen, who again started from second before coming through to finish 0.805 seconds ahead of championship leader Esteban Ocon (F) and Gustavo Menezes (USA). The podium was identical after race three on Sunday. The son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, Tom, remains the best-placed Volkswagen driver in second place overall on 174 points, behind leader Ocon (268). Verstappen’s hat-trick propelled him into third place, level on points with Lucas Auer (both 155).

Global Rallycross
Cool, powerful and quick: Volkswagen Beetle GRC unveiled

Volkswagen of America and Andretti Autosport launched the fastest beetle of all time in Washington D.C.: the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The rallycross car was developed for use in the Global Rallycross series and features a 544-hp (400 kW) straight four-cylinder engine, sequential six-speed racing gearbox, multi-plate limited-slip differentials on the front and rear axles, McPherson struts and ZF dampers. The Beetle is capable of accelerating from nought to 100 km/h in 2.2 seconds, up to a top speed of 200 km/h. Not only is what lies under the bonnet spectacular, but so is the exterior of the car: mudguard extensions, a larger rear wing, its low lie and streamlined front give it an aggressive, sporty appearance. The Beetle GRC will now undergo an intense programme of tests with works drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, before making its Global Rallycross debut later this season.

24h Nürburgring
Volkswagen’s “touring car graduates” shine at the 24-hour race

Four drivers who emerged on the scene as talented youngsters with Volkswagen, made it onto the podium at the Nürburgring 24 Hours: winner René Rast (D, Audi), runners-up Andreas Simonsen (S) and Lance-David Arnold (D, Mercedes), and third-placed Nico Bastian (D, Mercedes) all learned the tools of their trade in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup. The “touring car school”, which is synonymous with equal opportunity and affordable costs, was held with the Lupo from 1998-2003 and then with the Polo from 2004-2009. Since 2010, the Scirocco R has continued this unique concept at DTM events.

Global Rallycross
Fifth and sixth for Foust and Speed in Washington

The two Andretti Autosport team Volkswagen Polo RXs reached the final of the third Global Rallycross event in Washington (USA): Tanner Foust (USA) finished fifth, while team-mate Scott Speed (USA), the ex-Formula One and NASCAR driver, came home sixth. Foust was on the brink of missing out on the final, but came through his duel in the “Last Chance Qualifier” to qualify. “Generally speaking, the car has plenty of speed and we will be back among the front-runners in New York,” said Speed. He now leads the overall standings with 110 points, ahead of Nelson Piquet Jr. (BR), with Foust in 13 place on eleven points. The next Global Rallycross event will be held in New York (USA) on 20 July.

British Formula 3 Championship
Disappointing weekend for Li in Snetterton

Peter Li (RC) endured a disappointing fourth race weekend in the British Formula 3 Championship. The Carlin driver, whose Dallara F308 is powered by a Volkswagen engine, had to settle for two fifth places in the three races at the high-speed circuit in the county of Norfolk. Race two saw Li retire after just four laps. He now lies seventh in the overall standings. The next three races in the British Formula 3 Championship will take place in Spa-Francorchamps (B) from 24 to 26 July.

Porsche Supercup
Short but sweet for World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier in Spielberg

Sébastien Ogier’s guest start at the third race of the Porsche Supercup season, which formed part of the Formula One weekend in Spielberg, came to a premature end just a few laps in. The reigning World Rally Champion was back in the cockpit for the “project1” team for the second time after making his debut in the spectacular one-make cup in Monaco in 2013. “My radiator was damaged in a collision in all the chaos at the start. Unfortunately this resulted in me having to retire the car after seven laps, as the temperature had reached critical,” said Ogier. “Despite this, the race weekend was another valuable experience for me away from rallying.” Despite his retirement Ogier, who will line up in the Polo R WRC at the Rally Poland in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) this weekend, was impressed by the atmosphere at the new-look Red Bull ring in Spielberg.

Volkswagen Racing Cup
Di Resta and Fulbrook triumph in Snetterton

Stefan Di Resta, brother of DTM driver Paul di Resta, won race two in the Volkswagen Racing Cup in Snetterton on Sunday afternoon. The Brit’s Scirocco came home 0.2 seconds ahead of reigning champion Aaron Mason (GB). Third place went to Lucas Orrock (GB). In Saturday’s opening race, Joe Fulbrook (GB) triumphed ahead of Mason and newcomer Lucas Orrock (GB), who overtook di Resta two laps from the end to leapfrog him into third place. Mason leads the overall standings with 246 points, ahead of Fulbrook (236) and di Resta (230).

Volkswagen Fun-Cup France
Twelve-hour duel: Amand/Menard/Suzanna win in Magny-Cours

A twelve-hour marathon with a hard-fought duel for the lead over the entire distance: Pascal Amand, Julien Menard and Julien Suzann won the fourth round of the Volkswagen Fun-Cup France in Magny-Cours. Philippe Lemoine, Benoit Duppasage and Alain Ferté narrowly missed out on victory. The lead changed hands constantly between the two teams over the course of the race. Paul Corduan, Laurent Dub, Clément Dub and Grégory Servais finished third to join them on the podium. The twelve-hour race in Magny-Cours represented the perfect warm-up for the highlight of the Fun-Cup season: the 25-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (B) will take place from 11 to 13 July.
