Fueled by Fresh Determination, Burton Racing Heads to Watkins Glen

Following a challenging outing at Kansas Speedway just two weeks ago, Burton Racing arrives at Watkins Glen for the sixth round of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with fresh determination fueling their repeat championship hopes, which are still very much alive due to the team’s hard work and perseverance.

The familiar Burton Racing driver line up will be back in action around the historic 3.4-mile circuit in upstate New York as Mike LaMarra and Terry Borcheller share driving duties behind the wheel of the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda BMW 128i while Connor Bloum and Greg Strelzoff again pair up in the No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i.

Although racing luck has not favored the Burton boys in the last few rounds of competition, the entire team has maintained a relentless work ethic that sees Borcheller and LaMarra sixth in the championship, not far behind the leaders. The previous round in Kansas was especially difficult as electrical issues on the No. 22 BMW forced an early exit from the race. Contact to the No. 23 robbed its chance of a podium and so it is with increased determination that the entire Burton Racing crew heads to Watkins Glen, ready to reap the rewards of the team’s hard work.

The drivers arrive in New York with a boost of confidence thanks to having plenty of experience on the fabled road course. This will be the third year for LaMarra and Borcheller together at Watkins Glen. Borcheller has an extensive history at the track with highlights that include a win in his first race there in 1998 along with over 30 starts and a total of five trips to the top step of the podium.

Saturday’s race will mark Bloum’s IMSA debut at the track as a leg injury kept him from competition in last year’s race. However, his co-driver Strelzoff brings experience gained from last year’s race and Bloum himself has fond memories of the track having won at Watkins Glen in the Skip Barber Racing Series.

“The past few rounds have been a challenge,” said Team Manager Keith Burton. “But we are not discouraged, we are determined to keep working hard, doing our best and bringing home solid results. We have taken the short break to work on the cars and get them ready. And the Glen is a track that the drivers love, so we are looking forward to making the most of the weekend.”

The Watkins Glen event is the first time since Sebring that the entire IMSA series will be competing in one weekend, and it will be a busy one for the team. They will have two short practice sessions ahead of qualifying which takes place at 10:55 AM (ET) on Friday June 27th. The 2.5-hour Continental Tire 150 at the Glen will go green on Saturday June 28th at 11:35 AM (ET).

Live video streaming will be available at imsa.com and the race will air on FOX Sports 1 on July 6th at 10:00 AM (ET).
