Record Breaking F4 Weekend For Will Palmer At Snetterton
Southwater racer Will Palmer enjoyed a near faultless weekend (21/22 June) at Snetterton, Norfolk, in the BRDC F4 Championship, winning two out of the three races and breaking the F4 record for the greatest amount of points scored during a single race weekend.

The 17-year-old HHC Motorsport driver started his weekend in ideal fashion, qualifying on the front row for the first race, just 0.004 seconds away from the pole position time set by George Russell. The narrowness of the margin to pole left Will with mixed emotions but he put those behind him with a superb drive in the first race to take his first main season F4 victory. He previously scored an F4 race win in the Winter Championship at Brands Hatch last November.

Palmer made a good start to the race, challenging Russell on the run to turn one, but was pushed down to third place as team mate Raoul Hyman took the lead. Palmer fought back, overtaking Russell for second place on lap two before passing Hyman for the lead on lap three. He built a lead of more than three seconds at the end of the 10 lap race, setting fastest lap in the process, giving him pole position for race three at the end of the weekend.

"The start was tricky,” Palmer commented. “I tried really hard to take the lead off the line and tried to go around the outside of George at Riches on the first lap but couldn't quite do it. I tried again at the hairpin and fell to third. I picked off George on lap two, then Raoul on lap three, and from then on I was just putting in quick laps, not focusing on my mirrors and keeping my head down.”

The second race of the weekend took place on Sunday morning, the grid order being the top-eight finishers from the first race reversed. Will once more showed his fighting qualities by climbing from eighth to fifth at the chequered flag to bank more crucial championship points.

Having set the fastest race lap of the weekend, Palmer started from pole position for the final race of the weekend. He converted this to his second victory of the weekend with a commanding drive, despite having to deal with an early race Safety Car and late pressure from team mate Sennan Fielding.

Will’s HHC Motorsport team became the first to lock out all the podium positions in an F4 race, with Palmer leading home team mates Sennan Fielding and Raoul Hyman to cap a remarkable weekend. Palmer secured 86 points from the three races, an F4 record, to move into third place in the championship standings, just 31 points off the lead.

“It’s been an amazing weekend,” Palmer enthused afterwards. “The win in race one was great and to get a second win on the same weekend is absolutely fantastic.

“I have to say a huge thanks to the team. HHC gave me a fantastic car for this weekend and for the team to get a 1-2-3 finish in the last race is a massive achievement.”

Palmer is back in action on 18/19 July at Cheshire’s Oulton Park circuit. “I’ve been getting stronger at each round and Oulton Park is usually a good track for me. Hopefully we can have another good weekend there and aim for another win to continue my title challenge.”
