Spencer Gallagher Earns Hard-Fought 12th-Place Finish At Elko Speedway

Spencer Gallagher, driver of the GMS Racing No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet, had to struggle against an ill-handling car throughout the course of the Akona 250 presented by Federated Car Care at Elko (Minn.) Speedway on Saturday evening, and finished in 12th place. Gallagher qualified in 14th position for the shortest track on the ARCA Racing Series schedule. In the early laps of the race, Gallagher fought tight-handling that caused him to find a racing line that suited the car, which helped him gain spots on the race track during the first 50 laps of the 250-lap affair. After three caution periods at the 3/8-mile track, Gallagher was credited with seventh position, but by the time the fourth caution flag waved on Lap 66, the No. 23 had slid back to tenth place while battling lap traffic. Gallagher radioed his crew that the car was too tight in the center and upon corner-exit would snap to a loose-handling condition, which affected his ability to gain positions. Despite these handling issues, the team elected not to pit and Gallagher restarted the race in eighth place on Lap 75. Another caution period 75 laps later gave the Allegiant Travel team their first and only opportunity to work on the No. 23 Chevrolet. The pit crew changed four tires, removed tape, added fuel and made a track bar and air pressure adjustment, returning Gallagher to the track in 11th place two laps down to the leader. As the race progressed, the Las Vegas, native continued to battle with the car and the rest of the field as the handling issues returned. A loose-handling car coupled with a late-race, green-flag run caused the GMS Racing driver to fall two more laps down to the leader, but Gallagher fought until the very end. Throughout the 94-mile event he faced handling issues, and was able to earn a 12th-place finish when the checkered flag flew at Elko Speedway.

Spencer Gallagher Quote:

"We just missed it - plain and simple. I had my hands full all day with the Allegiant Travel Chevrolet. Looking at the day, it could have been a lot worse and we did get a top-15 finish, but I know we are a lot better than that.

"It was a tough day for the No. 23 crew. We struggled with handling issues for the majority of the day. I have to give my GMS Racing team credit though; they never gave up and made a variety of adjustments on our only pit stop of the day. We need to get back on the right track when we head out to Chicagoland Speedway."
