Busy in the Glen: Nielsen Takes On Double Duty at Watkins Glen

Christina Nielsen will pull double duty June 26-29 at Watkins Glen International when she competes in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama competition at the 3.4-mile track, as well as the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen.

Nielsen, 22, from Aarhus, Denmark, scored her first Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama podium with a second-place finish May 23 at Lime Rock Park.

"At Lime Rock, things came to me naturally due to experience I had gained at previous tracks this season," Nielsen said. "After a couple of laps, I felt confident about my race line. Combined with a good job done by my team NGT Motorsport, we finally achieved a podium spot."

In her first year of racing in the U.S., Nielsen is participating in the full 16-race Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama schedule with NGT Motorsport. She is also competing with NGT in the PatrĂ³n North American Endurance Cup, which rewards the top performing teams and drivers in the four longest races within the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

To prepare for two 45-minute timed Porsche GT3 Cup USA races and the six-hour TUDOR United SportsCar race in the GT Daytona class, Nielsen tested June 11-12 at Watkins Glen International.

"Watkins Glen seems like a very challenging track and a very fast one," she said. "It's not a track you learn easily, but I'm going to get a lot of driving time during the race weekend that I will benefit from. During my test days at Watkins Glen, I was driving an older Porsche Boxster, which is a lot slower than what I'll drive when I return. I was able to get a good idea about the best racing line, but I'll still have to find the limits of the track with my actual race car."

On the cusp of her second TUDOR United SportsCar race and sixth Porsche GT3 Cup USA race, Nielsen is still discovering tracks new to her and learning the driving nuances of her fellow competitors.

"When entering a new championship, you always have to get to know your competitors so it is easier to predict their moves on track," she said. "Simultaneously, I am learning new tracks, but I love how I learn so much from each and every one of them. I think Porsche has been great at welcoming me as a new driver, and I feel that I'm growing stronger as a competitor with my team, NGT Motorsport."

Nielsen is sixth in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama championship standings, with 48 points. She will race in two 45-minute Porsche GT3 Cup USA races at 3:10 p.m. (ET) Friday, June 27, and at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, June 28. The Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen race kicks off at 11:10 a.m., Sunday, June 29 at Watkins Glen International.
