Thompson Wants To End One Streak And Start Another At Watkins Glen

Arriving at Watkins Glen International with the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama point lead, Colin Thompson is both eager and anxious about tackling the legendary road course. While he’s never had trouble finding speed at Watkins Glen, it’s luck that has remained elusive.

Driving the No. 14 Porsche of Bucks County Porsche 911 GT3 Cup prepared by Kelly Moss Motorsports, Thompson is currently tied with Angel Benitez, Jr. for the GT3 Cup point lead, making this weekend a crucial round in his title chase. Thompson has no concerns about his pace at the challenging 3.37-mile circuit, but has memories of discouraging rain races and spinning Formula Ford cars in his previous visits to The Glen.

“I love the entire track,” Thompson said. “We did some testing there and we were quick. I love the length and I love the difficulty of the track. There’s a little bit of everything including high-speed technical aspects. I can’t wait to get there and end my streak of bad luck.”

In last year’s GT3 Cup event at Watkins Glen, Thompson collected sixth and 21st place finishes. This year, he is fully focused on collecting his first GT3 Cup win after earning podium finishes in three of the first five rounds. To do this, he’ll be concentrating on mastering the infamous “Bus Stop,” a quick chicane between Turns Four and Five.

“The Bus Stop is very important, but you can’t really set the car up for the Bus Stop because it’s so high speed and the weight changes so drastically going from right to left to right,” Thompson explained. “It’s all technique and it’s so hard to do it lap after lap after lap at such high speed. Most everywhere else on the track people will be within a tenth of a second or less, but at the Bus Stop, it’s difficult to go really fast through there, because it takes a lot of trust in yourself and in the car.”

It’s been a month since Thompson was behind the wheel of the No. 14, but he’s filled the time with the physical and mental preparations of any professional driver, including… video games?

“I’ve been training in the gym six days a week,” Thompson said. “I also read a study that said high-speed video games help your hand-eye coordination, so I’ve reluctantly been playing some video games.

“I think the main thing, at the end of the day, is being mentally focused on what you need to do when you get to the track. You can do all the preparation in the world, but if your head’s not where it needs to be it’ll go to waste.”

Thompson will have two chances at Watkins Glen to earn his first GT3 Cup race win and take a firm hold of the championship points. Race 1 is slated for Friday, June 27 at 3:10 pm ET. Race 2 will take place Saturday, June 28, at 6:45 pm.
