Arden International - GP2 Series, RedBull Ring Recap

The fourth round of the GP2 Series took place at the RedBull Ring this weekend, a first visit to the circuit in the Championship’s history. The track offers technical challenges with a combination of slow and fast corners with several overtaking opportunities.

Fridays qualifying session saw an impressive progression from Brazilian Andre, who secured an eleventh place, his best qualifying position in the Series. It was a turn of tables with his Arden team-mate, Rene who was unable to post a bold time, lining up twenty first for the Feature race. This was a disappointment to the Austrian, following an eighth place in the earlier free practice session.

Andre had a good start in Saturdays Feature race but was tapped at the rear into turn one by Russian Time driver Artem Markelov which bumped Andre forward causing damage to his front wing, dropping back to seventeenth. Rene had a good start gaining five places in the first lap. Both drivers made their mandatory pit stop a third-way through the race to change from Pirelli soft to medium tyres. Only able to make a little headway into the racing pack, Rene finished twelfth and Andre sixteenth.

Again, Andre made a great start in Sunday mornings race to tenth place by the second lap, however lost a place to pressure from Stephane Richelmi (DAMS), followed by Conor Daly (Venezuela GP) , Arthur Pic (Campos Racing) and team-mate Rene to finish fourteenth at the end of the 28lap race. Rene had a less fortunate start, losing four places on the first lap. However, this only incited the Austrian to make it up and push through the field to gain his original position. He crossed the line in twelfth.

Rene Binder, RedBull Ring, GP2 Series 2014

"Free Practice was really good but I didn’t quite get the right rhythm in qualifying. I didn’t feel so confident. We didn’t change much between the sessions it was only the tyre compound that I struggled with, going from medium to soft.

Not a bad feature race, not a lot is possible starting from p21 and with tyre degradation here, to finish p12 was respectable. The pace was good and I’m happy that we couldn’t have done much better in this race at a track like this. In race two, was a bit unlucky in the second corner as I got stuck behind two cars that collided and so I lost many positions and had to give everything to get back my 12th place. Looking back there was nothing to complain about our race performance but my qualifying needs improving. I am very sorry for my engineers and mechanics who give their very best without making a single mistake during the weekend. Needless to say, that I will keep pushing to deliver the results that reflect our true potential as soon as I can."

Andre Negrao, RedBull Ring, GP2 Series 2014

“Free Practice was difficult as we didn’t know if it was going to be dry or rain. When we went out it was a little slippery so I struggled and didn’t do a great job in terms of time. We made a couple of changes on the car for Qualifying which was much better and the car felt good, so we finished p11.

It was a difficult race with the incident at the beginning it really changed my race. I lost my front wing which meant I had a lot of understeer throughout the race. I was disappointed as I had to fight with the car. Race two, I made a super start and my pace was always good until the rear tyres dropped off at the end and I just could not make any overtaking manoeuvres. However, I think the result was quite reasonable. “
