Mee Ready To Race at Watkins Glen

Jerome Mee is thrilled to get behind the wheel of his No. 95 Alta Velocita Racing (AVR) car after more than three months away from Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda competition.

Driver/team owner Mee competed in the 2014 season-opening rounds in March at Sebring International Raceway, choosing not to attend Rounds 3 and 4 in early June at Kansas Speedway.

Mee suffered from electrical and mechanical issues at Sebring, including a broken harness that shortened his second race.

"Sebring was a bummer from a technical standpoint," Mee said. "Some days are good and some are bad in racing, but I'm just looking forward to having another chance at it. I'm a painfully competitive person, so it's great to get another chance to go out and compete."

Mee's next chance will be this weekend when he races Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28 at Watkins Glen International in support of the Sahlen's Six Hours Of The Glen event in Watkins Glen, New York.

This will be Mee's first race at the historic, 11-turn, 3.4-mile road course in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.

"Everything will be new," Mee said. "You don't know the track camber, how big of an elevation change there is, how tight some turns are. I've watched video on YouTube, looked at track maps. I have track notes from other drivers, but I really won't know until I get out there. I'll try to absorb as much information as I can and think through as much as I can beforehand."

The Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda field will have two practice sessions before qualifying and racing begins Friday.

"We don't have a test day, so at practice I really have to get up to speed and learn the nuances of the track as fast as possible and try and pick up pace," Mee said. "It will be pretty challenging."

Mee's engineer, Brad Pierce, previously raced at Watkins Glen in an open wheel car, and his knowledge has given Mee a basic understanding of the circuit.

"It's a lot like Road Atlanta, very smooth and flowing, with high banking areas," Mee said. "Like Sebring, there's not a lot of runoff room, and it's very high speed."

The upcoming Cooper Tires Prototype Lites schedule will pick up pace, with Watkins Glen the first of four races in the next three months. Mee said staying disciplined both on and off track will be key during this busy summer stretch.

"I have to keep a training regimen of working out and exercising," Mee said. "Doing the right things everyday is important when you get into a tight part of the racing season. You have to be disciplined in order to put yourself in a position where you feel confident in yourself on track and inside the car."

The green flag will drop for 30-minute Race 1 at 2:15 p.m. (ET) on Friday, June 27. The 45-minute timed Race 2 will follow at 8:10 a.m. on Saturday, June 28. To keep up with the latest trackside updates from the No. 95 machine, follow @AVRteam95 on Twitter and like the team on Facebook.
