Gran Turismo 6 Returns To Goodwood Festival Of Speed

Polyphony Digital Inc (PDI), the driving force behind the award-winning Gran Turismo® series, returns to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year as an official partner for the second year running. By far the biggest motoring event of its type in the world, with an expected crowd of over 200,000 people during 26-29 June 2014, this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is also set to be the biggest gathering of full-scale Vision Gran Turismo concept cars in the world to date.

Vision Gran Turismo is the brainchild of Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo and President of PDI. He called upon the world's leading automotive manufacturers and design studios to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo by creating innovative concept cars that will be brought to life within Gran Turismo®6, giving car enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of automotive design and technology. With no rules to restrain the designers, the resulting cars are audacious, breathtaking works of art – and, at the Festival of Speed, they aren't restricted to the virtual world alone.

Aston Martin and Nissan both launched their Vision Gran Turismo cars at Goodwood, with full-scale models unveiled and displayed for the public to admire at close quarters. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are also showing the full-scale versions of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo and the Volkswagen GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo, both of which are already available to race on the virtual tracks of Gran Turismo 6.

In keeping with Gran Turismo’s long track record for close and innovative partnerships with a number of automotive manufacturers, PlayStation®3 gaming race ‘pods’ will be located on the stands run by Alfa Romeo, Ford, Nissan and Volkswagen, as well as within the Moving Motor Show areas of Mercedes-Benz and Nissan. There will also be a pod in the exclusive Tag Heur Drivers’ Club, giving drivers the chance to familiarize themselves with the Goodwood Hillclimb and hone their skills in a virtual car before trying the real thing.

Kazunori Yamauchi will be at the event, inspecting the Vision Gran Turismo concepts. He will also be donning his overalls and helmet for some high-adrenaline drives up the world-renowned Goodwood Hillclimb, taking the wheel of a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS O’Shea and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N430.

Yamauchi-san commented, “There couldn’t be a more perfect setting to unveil the Vision Gran Turismo concept cars. I am delighted that we can share the full-scale models at the Festival of Speed with such a discerning audience, and it is great to be able to show off the cars in the real world as well as experiencing them in Gran Turismo 6. I’ve been lucky enough to drive cars up the Hillclimb before, which first fueled my desire to include this as a new track on Gran Turismo 6. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to drive such stunning vehicles at this iconic event again.”

Yamauchi-san always strives to reflect reality as accurately as possible within Gran Turismo 6, and when gamers take to the iconic Hillclimb in the game they will find that it has been updated for the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. On 22:00 hrs (BST) on 26 June, simultaneous to the real unveiling at Goodwood, the game also now displays this year’s eye-catching Goodwood Central Display, a homage to Mercedes-Benz’s racing history featuring the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow W 25 (1934-1936) and the Mercedes-AMG F1 W04 (2013).

Lord March said: “I am thrilled we are partnering with Polyphony Digital at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed and to be providing the stage for our event partners to showcase their stunning concept designs as part of Vision Gran Turismo. To be able to see the 2014 Festival of Speed course – complete with our new Central Feature – included on Gran Turismo 6 is very exciting.”

Adding to the drama of this automotive extravaganza, Ben Collins - the former Stig from Top Gear - will go head-to-head against a lifelong Gran Turismo fan in what will be a fascinating first-ever virtual v real Festival of Speed shootout. With Ben Collins taking the wheel of the new Ford Focus ST and his gaming counterpart in the virtual GT6 version of the hot hatchback, the pair will be racing each other simultaneously on the renowned 1.86km Hillclimb. The thousands of spectators around the grounds can catch all the action via Goodwood’s big screens that will broadcast this contest across a gripping spilt screen format.

Meanwhile Nissan, PlayStation®’s partner in the innovative GT Academy programme that aims to take the best Gran Turismo gamers and turn them into real racing drivers, will be hosting a live event ‘wildcard’ competition at Nissan’s Moving Motor Show area. This will present gaming and motorsport fans the last chance of securing a place at this year’s GT Academy UK Final.

Jann Mardenborough will be flying the flag for GT Academy at Goodwood over the weekend, offering advice to GT Academy hopefuls when he is not driving up the hill in the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 race car and the stunning new GT-R NISMO road car. Since winning the virtual-to-reality competition, Britain’s first ever GT Academy champion has gone from strength to strength on track, with 2014 seeing him knocking on the door of F1 as he races in the feeder series GP3. He has also competed in his second Le Mans 24 Hours race this month, and continues to prove that a PlayStation gamer really can be turned into a professional racing driver.
