ARCA Champ Kimmel Ready To Get Back On Track At Winchester

Frank Kimmel will get a weekend off from racing on the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards tour this weekend ahead of the next event on tour - the Herr's Chase the Taste 200 presented by Federated Car Care at Winchester Speedway Sunday, July 6.

However, that doesn't mean he won't be at the track.

"I'll probably be helping my buddy with his outlaw figure-8 car at the Sportsdrome," Kimmel said, referring to his 'weekend off'.

"I may race my late model at the Sportsdrome too. My brother-in-law Larry Meadors is driving it at the Sportsdrome tonight (last weekend), so if there's anything left, I'll probably get it in and race it this weekend.

"I drove home from MIS, got home at 2:00 a.m., got up early, got the racecar ready for the Sportsdrome, won the heat and finished fourth in the feature last time I raced it."

Apparently Kimmel just can't get enough.

"Some people probably don't like me coming over (to race at the Sportsdrome), but I think the vast majority appreciate and understand that I just like to race."

While Kimmel will get a quick breather from the ARCA Racing Series tour this weekend, the event at Winchester looms large on the horizon. No doubt he's eager to get back on track after a disappointing run in his last outing at Elko Speedway where he finished 11th. He was the defending race winner headed into Elko.

"I'm just really disappointed," he said. "After practice and that good qualifying run, probably the best of the year, the car just wouldn't turn when the race started. That's disappointing. I hate it for the Win-Tron guys; that's their home track."

Despite the Elko outcome, he remains third in the ARCA point standings.

Kimmel, in the No. 44 Ansell-Menards Toyota, is also the defending winner at Winchester.

"Well, I won there (Winchester) last year and the fastest car last year at Winchester was the 32," Kimmel said.

Kimmel was referring to the No. 32 Win-Tron Racing car with Mason Mingus in last year's race. However, Mingus got caught up in a wreck leading the race, which left Kimmel in charge. Kimmel switched from ThorSport Racing in 2013 to Win-Tron Racing for the 2014 season.

As a six-time ARCA winner at Winchester, Kimmel understands how to win on the historic half-mile, high-banked short track.

"Staying out of trouble at Winchester can be more difficult than other tracks...the speeds are so high. You have to look way ahead of yourself, keep your nose clean and manage your tires. All easier said than done."

In addition to the great racing action fans always get at Winchester when the ARCA tour comes to town, Kimmel appreciates the history and tradition that comes with running Winchester.

"It's definitely one of the better short tracks we go to. Charlie Shaw (track owner) has been a great support of ARCA over the years and he's made so many great improvements to the track. You can look back at over a hundred years of racing at Winchester...all the history, all the drivers who have won there; it's incredible. It's one of the most historic race tracks in the United States."

The Herr's Chase the Taste 200 presented by Federated Car Care marks the series' 25th silver anniversary appearance at Winchester, located near the Indiana-Ohio border, just northeast of Indianapolis.

The Herr's Chase the Taste 200 serves as the grand finale in a triple-header race weekend that includes the 'King of the Wing' Davey Hamilton-promoted Sprint Car East-West Shootout Friday, July 4 and the Top Speed Modified Tour on Saturday, July 5, which accompanies ARCA Racing Series practice and qualifying. The explosive and festive weekend culminates with the Herr's Chase the Taste 200 finale Sunday afternoon.

Celebrating a 'Century of Speed' at Winchester, the Friday night, July 4 show includes an Independence Day fireworks display, the 'Party in the Pavilion', the NASCAR Nationwide Series race from Daytona on big screen TVs and the Winchester Old Timers Club cars on display all three days..

Discount tickets will be available for $20 each at Menards locations in Anderson, Fort Wayne East, Fort Wayne South, Fort Wayne West, Muncie and Richmond, Ind., plus stores in Celina, Sidney and Tipp City, Ohio. Race fans can save $10 by purchasing a single-day ticket, or $20 by purchasing a three-day ticket for $55.

Kimmel will appear with his No. 44 Ansell-Menards Toyota at the Richmond Menards store, 3800 National East Rd. from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 4 and at the Anderson store at 2245 E. 67th St. from 2:30 to 4 p.m. His car will also be in the hauler parade heading to Winchester Speedway on Friday, July 4. A fireworks celebration will follow.

The Herr's Chase the Taste 200 presented by Federated Car Care will be at 2 p.m. The race will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
