2014 NHRA: Dsr Owner Schumacher's Hometown Race Off To Good Start Friday With 3 Teams Ranked In Top-5 Of Top Fuel

Three of four DSR Dodge Charger R/T Funny Cars are qualified in the top-five and the organization's three Top Fuel dragsters rank between second and fifth heading to Saturday's last two qualifying sessions heading to Sunday's championship eliminations for the 12th of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Tommy Johnson Jr., who won two weeks ago in the Make-A-Wish Dodge, holds the provisional No. 2 spot with a run of 4.038 seconds at 318.32 mph. DSR teammate Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS/Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund team rank third at 4.040 (312.50) and Jack Beckman in the Valvoline MaxLife Dodge is fifth at 4.048 (315.64).

In Top Fuel, Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team, were the second quickest of the day with a time of 3.804 (324.83) followed by Antron Brown's Matco Tools dragster in fourth at 3.808 (319.75) and the U.S. Army's Tony Schumacher in fifth at 3.812 (323.81).

Capps, who earned his first title of the season and 42nd of his career on Sunday at Epping, N.H., provided some drama on his last run when he produced a time of 4.040 (312.50) but was initially disqualified when it appeared he crossed the centerline and hit a timing cone.

But upon further review by NHRA, it was determined it was not certain that the cone was moved before the front of Capps' car crossed the finish line whereby ending the run.

"I was bummed that we were going to lose the run, and with the threat of rain (for Saturday) it meant we might not even get in the show," he said of his first run at 6.957 that would have placed him two spots out of the top-16 for Sunday eliminations.

"They were saying the headers are what knocked the cone over but by then the front of the car had crossed the finish line. (NHRA senior vice president of racing operations) Graham Light took the time to look at the TV footage and determined it was not conclusive. I commend him for taking the time to do that."

The Route 66 Nationals is the third of four Mello Yello events in four weeks leading to next weekend's Summit Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio.
