2014 Kentucky: Jimmy Weller NASCAR Truck Race Recap

Jimmy Weller and the No. 08 Geneva-Liberty Steel / Thunder Exhaust / Engine Parts Plus Chevrolet Silverado team finished 22nd on Thursday night at Kentucky Speedway. Experiencing an incident that acted as a setback during a mid-race restart, Weller worked on a different pit strategy than the leaders throughout the closing stages of the race. Forced to take a few gambles to regain lost ground, Weller and his SS Green Light Racing team could never catch the break they needed to rebound and instead finished in the 22nd position.

With a condensed schedule featuring all on-track activities in just one day, rookie contender Jimmy Weller worked closely with his team to both sort through setup options and learn the best line around the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway. Pleased with the handling of his truck during qualifying, Weller experienced brake issues during the 25-minute session that required repairs and forced the No. 08 Geneva-Liberty Steel / Thunder Exhaust / Engine Parts Plus Chevrolet team from their earned starting position, to instead start from the rear of the field.

With nothing to lose, Weller and his SS Green Light Racing crew opted to play a bit of strategy into the beginning stages of the race, pitting during each of the early caution periods to extend his pit window for the first round of four-tire pit stops. As green flag pit stops cycled through, Weller raced as high as the 12th position before coming to pit road during the lap 61 caution.

Making minor adjustments throughout the race to fine-tune the balance of his truck, the lap 83 restart left Weller a bit behind the eight ball. An incident on the restart forced Weller down pit road, causing him to lose valuable ground to the leaders and to utilize a different pit strategy. When the caution waved on lap 100, Weller and his Geneva-Liberty Steel / Thunder Exhaust / Engine Parts Plus team opted to stay on the track to take advantage of the wave around and regain a lap to the leaders. However, without a quick caution, Weller and other competitors were forced down pit road under green causing them to lose additional ground to the leaders. Without enough time to rebound, Weller crossed the finish line in the 22nd position.

"We didn't have the finish we had hoped for with our Geneva-Liberty Steel / Thunder Exhaust / Engine Parts Plus Chevrolet Silverado tonight," commented Weller. "It seemed like we had little things happen all day to put us behind, and unfortunately, there were a few that we just couldn't overcome. I appreciate all of the hard work from my SS Green Light Racing team; they did a great job preparing our truck, and they did everything they could to help us regain ground throughout the race. We were in a position where we had to take risks to get ahead, and unfortunately, those risks just didn't play out the way we had hoped. We'll analyze and evaluate everything that happened throughout the event to find if there are any areas where we could improve; nothing has changed, we're still focused on getting better week after week."
