Draco And Fantin Clinch Deserved Podium Finish In Moscow Race 1


On one of the coldest days in the World Series by Renault to date, a present kindly offered by the Russian round of the championship, Draco racing took the first podium finish of their 2014 campaign. On Moscow Raceway, the track designed by F1 guru architect Hermann Tilke and located in the outskirts of the capital, Pietro Fantin delivered a staggering performance both in Qualifying and Race 1, crossing the line in third place.

To start the day in style, Pietro posted the fifth quickest time in the morning timed session, a 1’21”304 that was just one tenth off a first row spot. To make things even better, a few minutes after the end of the session the Brazilian talent was promoted to P4 on the grid, a consequence of fellow competitor Merhi being handed a penalty for impeding another car.

Starting from second row, Fantin delivered a slingshot getaway, while at the same time third placed Rowland stalled his car. Entering Turn 1 in third place, Pietro started to push as hard as he could and immediately managed to open a gap on the competition, increasing it lap after lap and taking the flag with a 3” advantage on the closest rival. His third place finish came to the delight of the whole Draco staff, who had worked hard to turn Pietro’s feebdack into a perfect setup after yesterday’s practice sessions.

On the team’s other car Luca Ghiotto had a less satisfying day. Slowed down by traffic in qualifying, he couldn’t do better than 17th place, a position that made his race very difficult on such a narrow and twisty track.

Pietro Fantin: Q1 - P5; R1 - P3
"I'm really proud of the team and myself. Yesterday wasn't an easy day, we had some setup issues, but we didn't turn our back on those, we worked hard and fought back brilliantly. The car was really good today, I already felt it in qualifying, but in the race it was even better. Sure, I was a bit lucky as both Rowland and Gasly stalled, but you don't have to forget how unlucky I had been in Spa, taken out from both races without any blame. Now we have another day to do even better, we can still improve here and there and I'd like to get another podium finish tomorrow".

Luca Ghiotto: Q1 - P17; R1 - P16
"Luck doesn't want to be on my side here. Yesterday it was the red flag, today it was traffic which spoiled my best qualifying laps. Moscow Raceway is both short and narrow, and slower cars easily become an issue here. Unluckily, those features also mean that overtaking is really difficult here, and that starting from P17 there isn't much you can do. Keeping that in mind, in the race I focused on evaluating the setup changes we did today, so to help the team in refining our car even more for tomorrow".
