The driver of Don Schumacher Racing's Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster led by crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald qualified No. 3 for Sunday's championship eliminations in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Joliet, Ill., with his best of four runs being 3.783 seconds in the fourth and quickest session.

"Everything worked good for us today, but we really wanted that No. 1 spot," he said of the last run that slowed to 312.42 mph.

"The motor killed itself at the end and that's why the speed wasn't there, but we'll take it. That was a good lap for us even if we lost a little bit at the end.

"We'll dig tomorrow. We've got to dig deep and go to work. I'm really proud of the Matco Tools/U.S. Army boys for how hard they worked in the heat and humidity these last two days."

After two early evening and two runs under the lights on Friday and Saturday, it will be a big adjustment racing on Sunday that begins at 11 a.m. (CT).

"Conditions will certainly be a little different tomorrow," Brown, who qualified No. 1 last weekend at Epping, NH, said. "We're ready for that. That's going to be the biggest key tomorrow, just being able to adjust to the conditions and get down the track."
