2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey Route 66 NHRA Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 7

The Battery Extender team with driver Spencer Massey qualified seventh for Sunday's championship eliminations which begin at noon (ET) and will air live on ESPN2 beginning at 2 p.m.

But it wasn't their best lap of the weekend in 3.793 seconds at 302 mph that produced their confidence for Sunday's championship eliminations. It was actually their third qualifying run in the Route 66 heat that impressed the team.

The nitro-fueled machine, tuned by Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara, impressed with a 3.853-second lap that was low of the third qualifying session.

"That run in the third session on Saturday was really important to us," Spencer said. "That's the closest conditions to what we're going to get on race day so to go out there and have the best run of the session, that's huge for this team.

"The car is going down the racetrack and being consistent," he said. "Even going back to last week, it's just going down the track and it's predictable. Everyone on this Battery Extender team is pumped up. It's awesome."

Massey is racing in front of a hometown crowd for team owner Don Schumacher and his sponsor Schumacher Electric, which is headquartered in nearby Mt. Prospect.

"If we can just go some rounds on Sunday and put ourselves in position to race for that trophy in front of all the Schumacher Electric guests, that'd just be awesome. We'll be ready, that's for sure."

Spencer will race Bob Vandergriff in the opening round of Route 66 eliminations on Sunday.
