2014 NHRA: Ron Capps Route 66 NHRA Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 6

2014 NHRA: Ron Capps Route 66 NHRA Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 6

The only races Ron Capps loves more than those that carry the colors of NAPA AUTO PARTS is when the red, white and blue are added with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund logo on his Dodge Charger R/T.

Capps' Funny Car is helping kick off the month-long "NAPA Give Back Get Back" campaign in July at participating NAPA AUTO PARTS stores to provide support for the families of U.S. military personnel lost in service to our nation, and for those severely wounded in the performance of their duties in Afghanistan and/or Iraq.

The NAPA Get Back and Give Back campaign raised $1,000,000 last year for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

"There are so many great things about having a great sponsor like NAPA and one is being able to have a special car like the one we're running this weekend that lets us really give something back to someone who has given so much more than we could ever imagine," Ron said.

As sweet as it would be for Ron and Don Schumacher Racing's NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by Rahn Tobler to win an NHRA title for the second consecutive Sunday, he also would like to be able to salute the country's Fallen Heroes with four runs to the 43rd title of his NHRA career.

During any weekend that ends with the presentation of an NHRA Wally trophy, the winning team usually needs one break and Capps got his in the second qualifying session on Saturday night.

The NAPA team almost lost its best run of the weekend on Friday night when it jumped to the provisional No. 3 qualifying spot with a time of 4.040 seconds at 312.50 mph, but was initially disqualified when it appeared he crossed the centerline and either his left-side exhaust headers grazed a timing cone.

Graham Light, NHRA senior vice president of racing operations, reviewed the ESPN2 video and determined it was not conclusive the headers made contact with the cone before the nose of Ron's car reached the finish line that ended the run immediately.

The revised ruling saved Ron's weekend and earned him the No. 6 qualifying position.

That was a critical call because none of Ron's three other runs would have qualified him to race on Sunday. Each of his three other runs were in the 6-second range at less than 100 mph.

"Last night it was nice that they made that decision. It shows the growth of our sport," Ron said.

Beginning Tuesday, July 1, The NAPA Get Back and Give Back program will offer customers great savings on the purchase of a qualifying battery, alternator or starter, and the opportunity to contribute a portion of a rebate to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

NAPA will donate $1 to Intrepid for every qualifying rebate redeemed by consumers in July.

Consumers also can select to donate (in $5 increments) part or all of their earned mail-in rebate that ranges from $5 to $25.

Special "NAPA We Believe in Heroes" T-shirts and support bracelets can be purchased at NAPAonline.com with all proceeds benefiting the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

That's not all, during the month of July, consumers will receive a free NAPA Racing/Intrepid Fallen Heroes Patriotic cap with any $25 purchase at participating NAPA AUTO PARTS Stores and NAPA will donate $1 to Intrepid for every cap given away.
