GB Autosport's Tully's Porsche Set For Fourth Row Start In Sahlen's Six Hours Of The Glen

After three quick one-hour practice sessions at the historic 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International circuit, GB Autosport scored a fourth row starting position for the famous six-hour endurance event on Friday.

The race, which constitutes round six of the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and round three of the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup, marks a return to the endurance format after a pair of sprint race outings for the first-year team. In the short 15-minute session Damien Faulkner wheeled the No. 81 Tully’s Coffee Porsche 911 GT America he will share with co-drivers Michael Avenatti and Ben Barker this weekend to what the team hopes will serve as a lucky 13th starting position.

As the first fully combined IMSA event since Sebring with all four TUDOR classes in competition, the weekend was a busy one with limited on-track time for the Tully’s team. They had to make the most of the three practice sessions ahead of qualifying and quickly set to work on the Porsche, fine-tuning it for the endurance event. Unfortunately, that task became even more difficult as their last practice before qualifications was plagued by three red flags, making long practice runs almost impossible.

“I think we were expecting more to be honest,” said Faulkner after posting his qualifying time of 1:50.456-seconds. “Certainly after this morning, where we were seventh quickest. But it tends to be a bit of a trend unfortunately, we can be in the top-10 just before qualifying but come qualifying the rest all just go much faster, including our own brand, Porsche. We just aren’t quite hitting the sweet spot of this car, we still have some work to do. But having said that, this is only our fifth race so we can’t run before we can walk. Tomorrow we are just looking for a solid finish around the top-six. I feel like I am getting the best out of the car, but we just don’t have the speed so we need to extract more speed. But tomorrow we just want to bring home a clean finish and have a drama free race.”

While on-track time with the Tully’s machine was limited, the drivers made the most of a track walk Friday evening, taking the time to walk the entire track on foot and talk through the perfect lap with one another.

“I am still a little disappointed in our overall performance, but the car seems to be working well,” said Team Manager Cole Scrogham. “It seems to be relatively reliable so that will serve us well in the longer race tomorrow. Our speed basically stayed the same the whole weekend and there were several other cars that went significantly faster, so we wonder if they figured out something that we didn’t. So we are going to have to go back and really think about things for the race and how we want to set the car up for the longer run. But we have great drivers and we will see what happens.”

The Sahlen’s 6 Hours of the Glen is set to go green Sunday at 11:15 AM (ET). It will be broadcast LIVE on FOX Sports 1 starting at 11:00 AM (ET)
