Points For Gelael And Giovinazzi In Mixed Emotions Race

Sean Gelael and Antonio Giovinazzi have topped off a weekend of points paying finishes today with two further strong results in the final race of the FIA Formula Three European Championship weekend at the Norisring, Germany. Both Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers managed to avoid the first lap incidents to claim sixth and seventh as their own – Gelael recording his highest championship finish in the process. However for Tom Blomqvist his unlucky weekend continued as he once again found himself taken out of contention as he was tapped into the first corner while running in second.

The race got off to an unusual start when the Formula Three car of Dennis Van de Laar pulled off to the side of the grid meaning that the race was unable to start as planned and the entire field were sent on a repeat formation lap with yellow flags waving. Having made their way around once more the cars were finally allowed to race.

Off the line Blomqvist had launched himself well in his Jagonya Ayam with Carlin car and was in second position however his bad luck was set to continue as Jake Dennis locked up as he hit standing water and slammed in to the side of him at the hairpin. Blomqvist looked as though he was able to continue however he soon pulled his car into the pit lane and retired from the race.

Meanwhile as the safety car came out on track Gelael had moved up to fifth overall and Giovinazzi 7th – with both drivers ensuring that they stayed clear of the incident at the first corner. Gelael then continued his strong progress through the field and had soon moved past Santino Ferrucci for fourth position.

The Jagonya Ayam with Carlin pair remained in their positions until Ferrucci moved to take the place back – Gelael fought well however while defending his position Gustavo Menezes was able to sneak past as well and Gelael found himself in sixth overall with Giovinazzi close behind. From this point on, the drivers continued to run their own race as the clock counted down.

Towards the end, Giovinazzi came under a little pressure from Lucas Auer behind however was able to defend strongly as the flag fell. Gelael picked up points for his best finish in sixth and Giovinazzi finished in seventh.

Gelael said of his race, ‘I made quite a good start off the line and was up to fifth – of course it was a pity for Tom [Blomqvist] to be taken out at the first corner because as a team we were looking well. When the Safety Car went back in after his incident I made a lunge on Ferrucci and got the position but I couldn’t hold it through the race even though I was defending. But overall I’m very happy with the result and I hope that we can replicate this strong finish in Moscow.’

Giovinazzi added, ‘The race was ok for me. The start was good and I managed to avoid the incident at the first corner. As I made my way through the hairpin I came out in seventh which was good. At the end I had to defend the position from [Lucas] Auer however we kept it and took home more points. I’m looking forward to Moscow now and I hope that it can be better than here.’
