Trying Weekend For Sebastian Saavedra In Houston

KV AFS Racing's Sebastian Saavedra's weekend went from bad to worse before Race 2 of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston presented by the Greater Houston Honda Dealers had even started.

The No.17 Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. - KV AFS Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone machine had qualified 20th on the 1.634-mile, 10-turn temporary street circuit, however when Saavedra left pit lane for the start of the race he was instantly on the radio with a mechanical issue. The team brought him straight back into the pits to try and fix the problem and he rejoined the field at the back of the grid for the drop of the green flag. However, the car still didn't feel right and he was brought back in for further inspection. Despite being six laps down, Saavedra rejoined the contest and continued to fight and at times being one of the quickest cars on track, but could only move up positions when drivers began making mistakes. He eventually finished 17th and earned 13 points, which puts him 21st in the championship standings with 166 points.

"To be honest it's been a pretty rough weekend," said Saavedra. "It hurts more when you have an amazing car and just not able to use it. Yesterday was Ryan Briscoe and today was a mechanical issue on my out lap. We had to pit a few times to try and fix it and once we were back out there the Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. - KV AFS Racing car was one of the quickest. Unfortunately we were six laps down and could only advance through the field by other driver's mistakes, which is not where you want to be. I'm very proud of all my boys, they keep doing an awesome job. Days like this happen and we just have to regroup and look forward to Pocono next week."

This was Saavedra's fourth start at Houston. Last year, he had a best finish of 12th in Race 2 and a best start of 19th in Race 1.

The 24-year-old from Bogotá, Colombia, has been among the youngest drivers in nearly every series he has competed in. He joined the Firestone Indy Lights just before his 19th birthday and that year was awarded Rookie of the Year Honors with AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport. He moved to Bryan Herta Autosport for 2010 where he made his Indianapolis 500 debut becoming the third Colombian driver to do so. Saavedra then stepped up to the IndyCar Series in 2011 with Conquest Racing before returning to Indy Lights in 2012. Last year he spent the entire season back in IndyCar with Dragon Racing.

Saavedra returns to oval racing next week with the Pocono INDYCAR 500, July 5-6 in Long Pond, PA. The race will be broadcast live on NBCSports at 12:00 p.m. (ET) and IMS IndyCar Radio can be heard on Sirius 213 and XM 209, check local listings for your local station, or listen at IndyCar.com or on the Verizon Indy2014 app.
