Graham Rahal Announces Third Annual Helmet Design Contest

Verizon IndyCar Series driver, Graham Rahal, announced today that the Graham Rahal Foundation will host its third annual helmet design contest benefiting children’s charities. This year, the Graham Rahal Foundation has partnered with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a non-profit organization that raises awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer, to give children and families directly affected by the disease the opportunity to submit their personal designs.

Since 2012, the annual design contest has taken entries from the general public for Rahal’s race weekend helmets. This year, the contest will take a new shape and focus on children involved in the fight against childhood cancer. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will invite children and families involved with the organization to create a unique design on a pre-made helmet template with a theme of, “What Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation means to me.”

Design entries will be submitted between Monday, June 30 and Friday, July 11, 2014. Rahal will select five designs from the entries that will be posted on the Graham Rahal Foundation contest website at http://www.grfcontests.org. Fans will then be able to vote for the winning helmet design from Wednesday, July 14 to Wednesday, July 21, 2014. When voting concludes, the design receiving the most votes will be hand-painted by Art Rotondo, who provides the artwork for all of Rahal's Bell helmets. Rahal will feature the winning design on his HP7 Bell helmet when he races in the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma in Sonoma, Calif. on Sunday, Aug. 24. For the contest winner, Bell has donated a full-size RS7 helmet replica that will feature the design and be signed by Rahal.

Following the race, the Graham Rahal Foundation will auction the race-worn HP7 Bell helmet on Rahal’s celebrity eBay page at http://givingworks.ebay.com/graham-rahal/. One hundred-percent of the proceeds from the auction will be directed to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Since the inception of his Foundation in 2009, Rahal has worked with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer.

“I am very pleased with the new direction we are taking the helmet design contest,” said Rahal, 25. “We have successfully generated funds the past couple of years, but to directly involve those we are working with at the Graham Rahal Foundation makes it a bit more special for all concerned. I see this being the direction we take going forward, switching each year between Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and SeriousFun Children’s Network, the two children’s charities the Graham Rahal Foundation has supported since it’s start.”
