Tough Weekend In Texas for Conway

Last weekend saw Mike Conway back racing in IndyCar as the series returned to the streets in Houston, Texas. With his good form on street circuits, Conway was hoping to emulate his race win at Long Beach a few months ago.

Starting Saturdays race from the ninth row of the grid, in seventeenth place, Conway had some serious work to do. With a wet track and poor visibility, Mike expertly worked his way through the field to take eleventh early on in the race. He held his race position well, until with roughly an hour and a quarter left to run, Conway made contact with the barriers into turn three putting him out of the race with mechanical damage.

Race two of the Houston double-header saw Mike start again from seventeenth on the grid. With the frustration of the previous race, Mike was keen to get a good result from the weekend, despite driving the second race with a sprained thumb after his crash in race one. Another difficult start saw him make contact with Marco Andretti in the chicane on the opening lap of race two, forcing Conway to pit straight away to replace the whole front wing and heavily reducing his chance of a good result.

Conway returned to action just in front of the lead pack and fought off the challenges of leader Helio Castroneves for nearly 30 laps in his attempt to stay on the lead lap. On the harder black tires, Conway actually clocked quicker laps than the leaders later in the stint.

Despite all of this, Conway drove his N. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet, from last in the field to take thirteenth at the checkered flag.

"Going into the chicane on the first lap of race two, Marco (Andretti) made a move in front of me and I couldn’t stop quick enough,” said Conway. "It clipped the front wing and I think it cut the tire too. So I had to pit immediately and that really killed the race for us.“

Mike’s team mate and ECR owner, Ed Carpenter, will take the reigns for the next two oval races at Pocono Raceway and Iowa Speedway, with Mike back behind the wheel for the next double-header in Toronto.
