Gmg Maintains Strong Points In Watkins Glen Rounds Of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America

With the series participating for the first time at the historic Watkins Glen International, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) took another string of top-ten finishes to gain solid points in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America.

“Watkins Glen is a circuit that every driver should experience,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Everyone on the team did a solid job all weekend and it’s good to get additional points in the team championship.”

Driving at the historic 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course of New York’s finger lake region, GMG brought a three-car lineup to the event.

Highlighting the weekend would be the driving combination of Tom O’Gara and Dean DiGiacomo. Driving the No. 33 Lamborghini Beverly Hills / O’Gara Coach Company Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4, O’Gara would kick off the festivities during Friday’s Race One. Competing in the sportsman category, the Los Angeles resident would not only put in some incredibly quick lap times, but drive a perfect race without putting a foot wrong surviving an attrition-filled race and taking the checkered flag fourth in class. Having to skip out of Saturday’s Race Two due to other commitments, O’Gara would step aside for the experienced Dean DiGiacomo who would also drive flawlessly en route to a seventh place finish during today’s round.

“It was a fun race and a great track to experience,” stated O’Gara. “The cars and team were as well prepared as ever and my main goal was to just have a clean, fun race. We accomplished that and it was nice to finally get some solid points on the board. Thanks to everyone for making it happen and we look forward to the next round.”

Also taking a top five in the sportsman category was David Welch in the No. 14 machine. Welch, an experienced road racer with several accolades to his name, took his first laps in the Lamborghini machine this weekend to broaden his experience. During Friday’s Race One, Welch would overcome an early mishap to carve his way through the field during the 50-minute race en route to taking a top-five finish in his series debut. Unfortunately, during Saturday’s Race Two, mechanical gremlins would bite early on forcing the Washington resident to retire early.

Finally, driving the No. 88 machine from Lamborghini Vancouver, Stuart Davidson would also cap his weekend with a fifth-place performance. Also getting his first taste of the series this weekend, the Canadian endured a very calm Race One managing a consistent pace and coming to grips with his car in a calculated fashion. Stuart would take a very respectable fifth in class setting him up for an exciting Race Two. Unfortunately, a spin just past the halfway point would place the Vancouver resident in one of the track’s gravel traps forcing him to limp back to the pits where he would end his race.

“We actually had a really good time,” stated Davidson. “The car was an absolute joy to drive and I was doing my best to get quicker and quicker. Everyone at the team did a great job getting me ready and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at GMG for this.”

While GMG’s next endeavor is planned for the Pirelli World Challenge in Toronto, there may be some new announcements for The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America shortly.
