Amid dramatic action at the north Yorkshire track which saw numerous bruising encounters, Hereford-based Wood held his nerve to constantly improve positions throughout the day, culminating in a 14th place finish in the third and final race for the Houseman Racing team.

Wood, who is sponsored by leading British independent oil blender Morris Lubricants, earned two championship points for his efforts and heads into a long break before the next BTCC meeting at Snetterton on August 3 in high spirits.

"We had a really good weekend," said 29-year-old Wood. "We struggled a little bit last time out at Oulton Park with different set-ups in changeable conditions but we had a really good think about what we were going to do coming to Croft.

"We changed the car quite a bit and did a lot of changes in free practice one and two and we have taken that right through.

"We stiffened the car up and altered the springing on it, did some roll bar changes and altered the type pressure - it really did make a difference.

"We have just gone forward all weekend so we are over the moon."

After qualifying in 25th spot on Saturday, Wood began raceday in blistering fashion with a flying start in race one which saw him surge up nine places in his NGTC Toyota Avensis in the opening two laps.

A consistent performance saw Wood end race one in 18th position and he continued to make progress in the second affair of the afternoon until his desire to surge through the field saw him temporarily slide on to the grass.

Wood lost just two positions during that mishap and recovered brilliantly to finish in 17th spot, a position which could easily have been bettered as he crossed the line in a blanket finish.

Lining up next to BTCC legend Jason Plato on the grid in the final race, Wood continued his trend of impressive starts to again challenge higher up the field.

And he put the finishing touches to an excellent weekend by ending in an impressive 14th spot, his second best finish of the season so far.

"We can’t ask for any more than going forward all day and the whole team has been brilliant," added Wood.

"We kept our head down and when we got passed, we got back on the train and fought back.

"We are getting consistency and are building on the car all the time. The weeks will fly by and Snetterton will be here but we go there in really high spirits."

Morris Lubricants is based in Shrewsbury and supply Wood with a high performance range of gear and transmission oils, brake fluids, greases and maintenance sprays to keep the car fully operational in the heat of British Touring Car Championship battle.
