More Than $210,000 Raised For Charities During NASCAR Weekend In Sonoma

Charitable events combined to raise more than $210,000 for local charity groups during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend at Sonoma Raceway, June 20-22.

The proceeds from the majority of events will benefit Sonoma County youth organizations through the Sonoma Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of the raceway, which has distributed more than $4.5 million to qualified youth groups since 2001.

The Children’s Champions Grand Marshal’s Banquet generated $138,000, while the Ride-of-a-Lifetime Charity Auction, which was hosted in the Wine Country Winner’s Circle on NASCAR Sunday, raised more than $15,000.

The Grand Marshal’s Banquet was held on Friday, June 20, at Cline Cellars in Sonoma and featured Grand Marshal Vida Blue, a bay area Major League Baseball legend. The sold-out sit-down dinner, which also featured NASCAR drivers Michael Waltrip, David Ragan, Boris Said and Dylan Lupton, was hosted by racing analyst and former NASCAR crew chief Larry McReynolds. Proceeds from the banquet will be split between Speedway Children’s Charities and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley.

More than $20,000 was also generated through various donations throughout the weekend, including a $5,000 donation on behalf of the Transporter Drivers of Motorsports Association (TDMA), who participated in the 4th annual NASCAR Hauler Parade in Sacramento on June 19.

“NASCAR 2014 produced a thrilling race on the track and a terrific result for dozens of youth organizations in the North Bay,” said Steve Page, president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway. “Our thanks to everyone who participated, sponsored, donated and made this outcome possible.”

In addition to the proceeds generated for SCC, Levy Restaurants, the official caterer of Sonoma Raceway, hosted 14 local non-profit groups to support concession stands around the facility. In return for their hard work, Levy gives back a portion of sales to support those non-profit organizations. These groups, including Benicia High School Band Boosters, North Bay Athletics, Air Force Sergeants Association, California Martial Arts, Fairfield High School Athletics, Omega Foundation and Vallejo Junior Jaguars Youth Football, among others, received a total of almost $38,000 after NASCAR weekend.

Sonoma Raceway and Levy Restaurants also supported Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) and Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance on Saturday, June 21. The groups hosted approximately 100 guests for a special day at the track. Proceeds will benefit programs serving youth in Sonoma Valley, including mentoring, school counseling and youth employment services.
