2014 NHRA: Arana Jr. Hopes To Keep It All In The Family In Norwalk

Now that one dream has been fulfilled for the Lucas Oil Pro Stock Motorcycle team, Hector Arana Jr. would like to reach another goal during the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park.

Arana beat his father in the final last weekend at Route 66 Raceway, but he would love to race his brother Adam in a similar situation.

"Now we've just got to do a brother-brother final," Arana said.

Arana began racing in 2011, but the Chicago race was the first time he had faced a family member in the final round. The Aranas have all faced each other before, but each gives no quarter, so should Arana line up against Adam or his dad, the best man will win.

Still, the competitiveness is limited to the racetrack at Arana Racing.

"This sport is known for the family atmosphere," Arana said. "Families are always welcome at the races. It's definitely a great thing for our sport and we're all one big family. We're all here racing as a family and having fun."

And racing for victories, too. Arana has eight wins in 14 final-round appearances in his short career, with the Chicago race being his first victory of 2014. He's third in the points standings heading into Norwalk, the seventh race of the Pro Stock Motorcycle season.

"We knew we had good bikes," Arana said. "We just had a couple little issues here and there. We finally got our act together and we had to earn every round. None of those rounds were given to us and it was a battle to the end.

"We definitely earned this win, and we're ready to go on and earn some more."

Only the Harley-Davidsons of Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec are ahead of Arana in the points standings, but Arana could be getting on a roll similar to 2013, when he won the first three races of the season.

"That's what makes us strive to do better," Arana said of the Harleys. "We're not going to let them just overpower us or have the upper hand. That's just going to motivate us to do even better and run even stronger and compete for No. 1."

Qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals will be held at 4:45 and 7:15 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and eliminations begin at noon, Sunday. ESPN2 will carry all qualifying and elimination action.
