Declan Jones Impresses In Debut V De V Proto Race In Dijon

Declan Jones impressed in the 2014 V de V Endurance Series event at Dijon in France last weekend (June 27-29), when he made his debut in the Endurance Proto class with RLR Msport’s Ligier JS53 Evo.

The Halewood Village-based youngster, who shared the car for the three hour race with Kelvin Fletcher and Dean Stirling, put in a strong performance, especially considering he had not driven the car until the Friday.

He went faster and faster every time he went out and despite tricky conditions in the race, made up seven places in the first five laps of his stint and when the rain started again was one of the quickest on track. Despite then having his run cut short due to a crank sensor failure, Declan was still very happy.

“I think it was a good weekend and it was great to get the experience of driving a Prototype. It was something totally new for me. I have never driven something with that sort of downforce. It was fantastic and really eye opening,” said Declan, who is backed this year by Club Liv Manchester, The London Perfume Company, Chicago Soft, Twisted, Vision Tech, Taylors Fitness and Power and Fitness Gym.

“I didn’t get as much seat time as I would have liked over the weekend. But I feel I still progressed really quickly and got to grips with it. There were some good people around to give me some advice. It was just basically understanding and trusting the amount of grip it was going to generate.

“Obviously I am use to GT cars. They have a lot of grip, but it is mechanical grip - it is not aero. It was just a case of knowing it was going to grip when I took a corner at a certain speed. It was just about getting my head around it really. But it didn’t take me too long and I wasn’t far of the pace at all by the end,” he continued.

“In the race it was a shame the car developed a problem and my stint got cut short. But other than that it was good.

“The conditions were tricky. It was one of those days where it didn’t know what it wanted to do. We didn’t know if it was going to rain or dry up. It was a mixed bag of a day. But I still really enjoyed it. The car was fantastic and it was great to work with Kelvin and Dean and everyone at RLR Msport.”

RLR Msport Team Principal Nick Reynolds commented: “Declan got on amazingly well. He approached it like a true professional, as expected. He got quicker and quicker to the point when he was in the race he was one of the quickest cars on track. He got there in a very short period of time too having never driven a high downforce car before. I was flabbergasted with how quick his progression was.”
