Percat Solid In Townsville Practice

Coates Hire Racing's Nick Percat has enjoyed a solid Friday practice ahead of this weekend's Castrol Townville 500.

Percat aboard the Coates Hire sponsored HHA Racing entry from Walkinshaw Racing, was seventh fastest in final practice and ninth overall for the day; just one place behind last year's race winner and team-mate Garth Tander.

This weekend's race includes an extra 100km of racing over the previous races in Townsville. Despite Percat being a rookie in the V8 Supercars Championship this year, everyone in the field will have to deal with the new format.

"It was a better day for us and to be quickest of our four cars in the final session is pretty cool," said Percat.

"We still have a lot of work to do - need to find around three-tenths of a second, but I feel confident we are headed in the right direction.

"Tyres right now are everything, and in that last session if you had a good tyre bank, you were going to end up in a good position.

"The track is evolving a lot and even at the end of the session we sat on the second fastest time and in the final 60 seconds we dropped back to seventh."

Percat will face two separate 10-minute qualifying sessions ahead of the opening two 125km races in the afternoon.

Also on track this weekend is Coates Hire Racing's John Bowe aboard the IL Bello Russo Ferrari 458 Italia G in the Australian GT Championship.

Bowe is driving with Tony D'Alberto, as regular driver and car owner Peter Edwards is overseas on business.

Despite Bowe's many years of experience in a wide range of cars and tracks, this is his debut on the streets of Townsville.

After setting the eighth fastest time in first practice, Bowe qualified the Ferrari in third place for the first of three 40-minute races for the weekend.

"It's quite a tough little track," said Bowe.

"I'm still learning I guess and I'm still not maximising a couple of bits of it, but it's still fun.

"It's great to be here with Tony, who I rate as a fine driver, and it's been good to use his experience of the track.

"I think these cars are suited to longer races, but we will have three 40-minute races which means our starting position is even more important."
