Race Of Argentina Presented In Buenos Aires

The Race of Argentina, the eighth round of the 2014 FIA WTCC, was presented yesterday at Buenos Aires in a press conference hosted by the President of the Automóvil Club Argentino, Jorge Rosales, in ACA’s premises.

The presentation attracted over 100 media representatives and was broadcasted live on national TV. Enrique Meyer, the Nation’s Minister for Sports, attended the event and stressed the importance of the WTCC event for the country: “The Argentine government is supporting the FIA WTCC event and we are happy to see it growing. This second edition is going to be a stellar event similar to the Dakar. The province of Santiago del Estero has invested a lot to make Termas de Río Hondo the best circuit in South America and we all are thrilled by the excellent results of ‘Pechito’ López, who has become a great ambassador of our Country, just like the national football team.”

Rubén Ricardo Sosa, Secretary for Sports of Santiago del Estero province, confirmed: ‘‘We are proud of hosting the FIA WTCC, the Dakar and the MotoGP, they all are terrific means to showcase our province. With the new garages and lounges, the track of Termas has now reached top international standards.”

François Ribeiro, WTCC general manager, admitted: ‘‘I don’t know whether Argentina will win the Football World Cup, but what is sure is that an Argentine will come to Termas as provisional leader of the FIA WTCC. The last Argentine to win a FIA world title was Juan Manuel Fangio himself, back in 1957, that was 57 years ago... The road to Macau is still long but the WTCC is potentially the only FIA World Championship that can have this year a non-European Champion. Regardless of the final result, what José María López has achieved so far in the WTCC proves the exceptional quality of Argentina’s touring car racing, whose popularity in this Country is second to no other competition.“
Ribeiro concluded hinting about the future: ‘‘If we have the possibility of opening the 2015 season in Argentina, without clashing with the MotoGP, it will be a perfect way to reward the efforts and the support received by Argentina and its authorities.”
