Front Row For Lynn At Silverstone

Carlin’s Alex Lynn will start his home GP3 race from the front row of the grid after qualifying second for the first GP3 race of the weekend later today. Team mate Emil Bernstorff was also competitive, qualifying in sixth place in a rain soaked session. Luis Sa Silva was on the brink of the top ten for the majority of the session but dropped to 18th in the final stages.

Heavy rain created tricky conditions for the GP3 drivers this morning as they took to the circuit for qualifying. As the last cars on track last night and the first out this morning, the GP3 teams had hoped to have some continuity on their side – but conditions could not have been more different to yesterday’s dry practice session.

As the cars left the pit lane, spray was clearly an issue and within the opening minutes an accident between Mitch Gilbert and Balthasar brought out the red flag. After a lengthy period, the session was restarted with 26 minutes still on the clock.

British racer Lynn was on the pace straight away, his first flying lap sent him straight to the top of the timing screens, although that effort was soon bettered as a slightly drier line emerged on track. Ten minutes in, Sa Silva was 10th and Bernstorff 15th.

Austria race winner Bernstorff was improving as the conditions did, the Anglo-Dane jumped up to sixth place while Lynn was second. At the half way point of the session, Lynn pitted for new wets, shortly followed into the pits by team mates Bernstorff and Sa Silva.

Making the most of his new tyres, Lynn set a purple first and second sector to take provisional pole by over a second. Bernstorff was also improving after dropping down the order and was fourth while Sa Silva was 13th.

In the final minutes a few drivers managed to improve – notably Jimmy Eriksson in the Koiranen car to snatch P1 from Lynn, who was unable to respond next time round. At the chequered flag it was Lynn second, Bernstorff with the sixth fastest time and Sa Silva 18th.

“I’m a bit disappointed to be honest”, said Lynn. “The time was in the car but the tyres had gone a little bit by the end of the session. It would have been nice to get pole. But it was a solid effort and there’s plenty we can do from second.”

Team mate Bernstorff added, “I didn’t really feel in the groove during that session, so considering that I think sixth is ok. I hope it’s wet still during the race, otherwise it could be hard to overtake.”

The first GP3 race of the weekend takes place at 16.20 later today.
