Conditions Make For Tough Opening Day For Nagl In Sweden

Today was a tough day on track for the MXGP riders, not just because the track has been changed and reversed since last year so was essentially new to everyone, but because the conditions were a tricky blend of hard and soft surface and all the while very slippery.

Starting the qualifying race from seventh, Max Nagl gave himself a little work to do early on but, despite it being hard to pass on because of the lack of a choice of lines, managed to fight back to an eventual eighth on his CRF450RW.

Sweden is a track that the German has run well at in the past, including most recently a second position in race one last year, but today he was finding it tough to establish a good feeling and rhythm. A few changes to be made to the bike by Team HRC overnight will hopefully help him in this area.

Race one starts tomorrow at 1415hrs local time, and with the chance of storms still on the forecast, it may be a different situation out on track altogether.

The day was not so good for me today. They changed the track and when I walked it on Friday it was looking pretty good but to ride: it’s rock hard underneath, no ruts, no lines, really really slippery – very difficult.

The riding was not going so well today. In the qualifying race I had a good gate jump, and then on the straight I lost some time so I was 9th into the first lap. Towards the end I was fighting a lot with de Dycker and Simpson for sixth - I was really close to de Dycker and Shaun was behind us but I could not pass Ken. I tried many different lines but that cost too much time so Shaun passed which was disappointing.

Now we change some small details on the bike and hope it’s better tomorrow. It’s just something we’ll try in the warm-up and see if it helps the feeling.

It’s a difficult track today, simply because it’s hard in places, soft in others, in some places there are bumps, and it’s very slippery. He just slightly missed the start which put him on the back foot battling amongst the pack which was quite difficult. It’s difficult to pass here. People are passing, but it’s mostly reliant on a rider making a mistake for you to get through. It’s ok for tomorrow – the position is not so bad. He just needs to get out cleanly tomorrow from the start which I can think can happen with the few things we’ll do to the bike to help him.
