2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey Summit Racing NHRA Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 8

The start of the second half of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season marked continued qualifying success for Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel team.

The team used the fourth and final session to clock their best lap of the weekend, a 3.800-second run at 324 mph to qualify No. 8 for Sunday's 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

The Battery Extender team led by crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara qualified in the top half of the16-car fields for each of the four NHRA events held over the past four weeks.

"The race car has been performing very well in qualifying for the last few weeks but we just need to do that on race day," Spencer said. "The fact that we've been in the top half for each race in this four in row is huge for this team.

"We've seen some hot, humid tracks and here it was a little bit cooler so they've really done a great job figuring out this car and getting it down the track at each event.

"We won here two years ago so we know what it takes to get it done. It's not going to be as hot here tomorrow as it has been in the past few years so it's going to be a better racetrack."

The northern Ohio weather has been mild compared to years past where teams raced in 95 degrees. Sunday's forecast calls for a high of 81 degrees. NHRA Mello Yello teams qualified in the early evening and nighttime for their four qualifying attempts but that doesn't concern Massey.

"We have power now," he said. "This Battery Extender dragster wants to make power and is running good speeds and if we have a good track to run it on Phil and Todd will be ready. If they do their job and I do mine maybe we'll pull it off again and come away with the trophy like we did in 2012."

No. 1 Qualifier: Shawn Langdon (Al-Anabi Racing) 3.745 sec., 325.22 mph
