2014 NHRA: Ron Capps Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 5

Ron Capps is well known for sharp focus once he puts on his racing helmet.

That could get a stern test when eliminations begin at 11 a.m. (ET) Sunday in the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in northern Ohio.

His immediate goal is to leave Norwalk with the Wally trophy so he can check off the next-to-last track on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series tour where he has not visited the winner's circle.

"I'm very lucky because I've won at every track except Norwalk (and Reading, Pa.)," said Ron, who is qualified No. 5 for eliminations with a best run of 4.048 seconds at 316.15 mph with Don Schumacher Racing's NAPA AUTO PARTS/Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund Dodge Charger R/T on Saturday night's last pass.

"That tells you the caliber of car owners I've driven for like Don Prudhomme and now Don Schumacher, and the caliber of crew chiefs and crews they've given me. If we could scratch Norwalk off the list it would be great."

Added motivation is to get the NAPA AUTO PARTS/Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund Dodge to the championship round to provide maximum television exposure for the NAPA Get Back and Give Back campaign throughout the month of July.

"You won't hear NAPA brag about it but they give so much support to our troops," said Ron, who starts Sunday ranked fourth in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series standings.

The NAPA Get Back and Give Back program last year raised more than $1 million.

"It's important to our NAPA team to do everything we can to get this car into the winner's circle. It would be so fitting for this NAPA Dodge to win on the Fourth of July weekend with its star-spangled, red-white-blue paint scheme with Intrepid Fallen Heroes on the side."

Ron will have to sharpen his focus Sunday so it doesn't shift to a two-week adventure that begins Monday when he loads his motorhome with his wife, Shelley, and their two teenagers for a week of camping near his hometown of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and the following week at Sonoma, Calif.

"This will be so much fun," Ron said. "Taylor will be 18 during the race at Sonoma and Caden became a teenager last week. It's harder and harder to get quality time with them but when they get in the RV I can lock the door and they can't go anywhere."

The only additional passenger he would like to add to the trip would be a Wally trophy from Norwalk.

The event at Norwalk, which marks the start of the second half of the 24-event season, is the fourth of four straight Mello Yello event racing weekends.

NAPA GET BACK AND GIVE BACK

NAPA will donate $1 to Intrepid for every qualifying rebate redeemed by consumers in July. Consumers also can select to donate (in $5 increments) part or all of their earned mail-in rebate that ranges from $5 to $25 when purchasing a new battery, starter or alternator.
