2014 NHRA: Arana Jr Poised To Start A Winning Streak In Norwalk

Chicago Pro Stock Motorcycle winner Hector Arana Jr. was in danger of not qualifying for eliminations at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals until a phenomenal run Saturday at Summit Motorsports Park has him positioned to take home his second win of the season.

After a shaky first day of qualifying for the Lucas Oil Buell rider, Arana showed his true skill Saturday with a 6.859 at 195.79 mph in Q4 to land him No. 2 overall.

"I wasn't worried," Arana said. "I knew we had the bike to get in. It was just getting the bike to leave the line that was the issue. From Chicago with my brother not getting in, we put my tire on his bike to eliminate that problem. We tried an old and a new tire on my Buell and both times it didn't get down the track. We ended up going back to the one we had been running all year and it went right down no problem. Of course, we softened it up because we knew we had to get in.

"Once we made that pass, we were able to tune on the bike a little bit and it ran really well. I just really wish we could have had those two extra sessions because, who knows, we might have been able to get that No. 1 spot and get extra qualifying points. All that matters though is that we're in the show, we're lucky No. 2, and we're just going to go with that."

While Arana seems to be back to his usual caliber of competition, he's not getting overconfident about his chances during eliminations. With a close Pro Stock Motorcycle field, Arana knows that an upset is possible even when he faces No. 15 Jim Underdahl in the first round.

"All these bikes right now are good competitors," Arana said. "Any one of them that qualifies No. 16 could run the numbers in eliminations. I wasn't even in the field until today's sessions. I still have to go out there one round at a time, stay focused, and do my job."

Arana will look to win back-to-back races when eliminations begin at noon, Sunday. ESPN2 will carry all elimination action.
