2014 Pocono 500: IndyCar Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

Welcome to round eleven of the 2014 IndyCar championship schedule, the Pocono IndyCar 500 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. Scott Dixon won the 2013 event, which was the first IndyCar race at the track since 1989 (CART).

Pocono Raceway was track was built in 1968. It has 14 degree banking in Turn One, 8 degree banking in Turn Two, and 6 degree banking in Turn 3. The straights are flat at two degree banking and very long. The frontstretch is 3740 feet with a backstretch of 3055 feet. The shortstetch is still 1780 feet. The pavement was re-done in 2011. In all, the track seats nearly 77,000.

Pocono is the fastest track outside of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the infamous Indianapolis 500 is hosted. It also will use a 3-wide field at the start while restarts will be single-file.

Yesterday, Juan Pablo Montoya set a track record with a lap of 223.871 mph, and he will start from Pole. Since returning to IndyCars after 10 years racing NASCAR stock cars, Montoya has yet to win a race. He does have two podiums this season - the oval at Texas, and the street course at Houston.

Will Power will start in the middle of Row 1, with Carlos Munoz starting on the outside of Row 1. Of Power's 21 IndyCar victories, he has just two oval wins - Texas (2011), and Fontana (2013). Munoz has never won an IndyCar race in 13 tries over two seasons.

While Row Two is fast, they have just six career wins between them: Takuma Sato, Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe. None of those wins have come on a big oval.

Row Three however has three Indianapolis 500 winners: Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay.

While there is no obvious pick today, we are going to go with Juan Pablo Montoya for his first win of the season. Montoya has been showing very well lately, and now has the fastest car for the first time this season.

Should the pick fail us, keep an eye on Row Three, your winner will come from there.

Enjoy today's 2014 IndyCar Pocono 500, the second race of the Triple Crown! (Indianapolis, and Fontana).
