Bernstorff On The Podium At Silverstone

The Carlin GP3 team claimed another podium finish at the Silverstone round of the 2014 GP3 Series today, following a strong race by Emil Bernstorff to P3 and his third podium finish of the season. Bernstorff made a good start to make up places off the grid, while team mate Lynn lost out, but fought back throughout the racing action to climb back up to sixth place. Luis Sa Silva made up several places to cross the line in ninth place, just outside the points.

Starting from fifth on the grid, Bernstorff made a storming start as the race got underway, initially moving up to second place and putting race leader Richie Stanaway under pressure for the lead. Team mate Lynn meanwhile lost a handful of places in the run down to the first corner and had dropped outside the top ten. Sa Silva had made a strong start from his 18th place grid slot and was up to 15th.

Bernstorff was still very much involved in the racing action on lap two, with Nick Yelloly putting the GP3 rookie under pressure for second. Bernstorff defended well for several corners, but Yelloly made a decisive move to steal into second putting Bernstorff into third.

Determined to make up for the start, Lynn was fighting back. The Red Bull Junior was involved in a prolonged battle with yesterday’s race winner Jimmy Eriksson, the duo running line astern just outside of the points, just as they had yesterday while fighting for the lead. The order changed after a four way battle between Patrick Niederhauser, Pal Varhaug, Eriksson and Lynn resulted in contact. Niederhauser and Eriksson both ended their races in the gravel, while Lynn was just able to avoid the incident and moved up into ninth place.

Next on Lynn’s radar was Jann Mardenborough, with Lynn take eighth and the final points paying position a lap later, as behind him Sa Silva had moved up into 12th place. Both Lynn and Sa Silva continued to make progress over the final few laps; Lynn closed in on Dino Zamparelli while Sa Silva was now up to 11th place.

With just lap remaining both Zamparelli and Lynn passed Dean Stoneman putting the Carlin driver seventh, but Lynn was still pushing hard to pass Zamparelli. On the final lap Lynn made the move and took sixth from Zamparelli not long before the chequered flag. Sa Silva meanwhile had made up another position, taking the flag in ninth place, just outside the points.

At the front, Bernstorff had held off pressure from Kirchoffer and took his third podium of the season to consolidate his fourth place in the drivers’ standings. Lynn still leads the standings after three rounds.

Speaking about his race, Bernstorff said, “I made a good start but then I think I braked a little too early at Brooklands when fighting with Richie [Stanaway]. But another podium is a good result for us. Leaving here with a fourth and third place is a good result for the championship.”

The GP3 drivers will be back in action in Hockenheim in two weeks’ time.
