2014 British GP (Silverstone): Formula One F1 Race Results - Hamilton, Mercedes Win!

By Mike Sulka

In front of 120,000 fans, Mercedes Formula One F1 driver Lewis Hamilton picked up a victory at the 2014 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit. For Hamilton, it it his fifth win of the 2014 season and 27th career Formula One F1 victory which ties him with Jackie Stewart for seventh on the all-time win list (Stewart did it in 100 starts, while Hamilton took 138). It was also Hamilton's 61st career podium which breaks his tie for 9th all-time with Nelson Piquet - David Coulthard is just ahead at 62 podiums. With the victory, Hamilton closed to within four points of the 2014 Formula One F1 world drivers points championship. This is also Hamilton's second win at the British Grand Prix, his last came in 2008 - racing for McLaren.

For Mercedes, it was the team's eighth victory of the year in nine tries. The victory marked the team's 21st all-time as a constructor.

Grabbing second was Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 Williams who started 14th. It was his second career podium, and second in a row (second at Austria). For Williams, it is the team's 299th podium.

Rounding out the podium was Daniel Ricciardo and his No. 3 Red Bull who started 8th. For the Australian, it was his fourth podium of the 2014 Formula One F1 season, and 4th of his career.

Jenson Button and his No. 22 McLaren would finish fourth, his 15th finish off the podium at Silverstone in 15 tries.

Sebastian Vettel and his No. 1 Red Bull won a thrilling battle for fifth with Fernando Alonso (Ferrari). With both drivers complaining about the other during the fight over many laps.

Alonso was without a doubt the most exciting driver of the day, but was also warned about "exceeding the limits of the track". He finished sixth.

Kevin Magnussen (McLaren) would pick-up seventh followed by Nico Hulkenberg (Force India), Daniel Kvyat (Toro Rosso), Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso).

For Nico Rosberg and his No. 6 Mercedes, he made a great start and was in full control of the race until his car began experiencing gearbox issues on lap 20. It would last until lap 30 before failing. It was Rosberg's first DNF of the season, but he retains the championship points lead. Kimi Raikkonen and his No. 7 Ferrari exited Aintree wide, hit a massive bump and lost control while returning to track. The car then had a massive hit against the steel barrier, and careened back onto the track collecting Felipe Massa and his No. 19 Williams. Raikkonen limped away - favoring his left knee or ankle - from his shattered car and was reviewed by medical staff. Ferrari indicated that the first thing Raikkonen asked his team on the radio, "Is Felipe OK?"

The incident brought out a Red Flag while repairs could be made to the steel barrier. It was the first red flag on lap one in 14 years. The last came at the Monaco Grand Prix. The Red Flag period lasted a full hour.

Next up for the Formula One F1 season will be the German Grand Prix in two weeks.
