Status GP Scores One-Two In British GP Support Race

Status Grand Prix's Richie Stanaway and Nick Yelloly scored a one-two in Sunday’s GP3 Series curtain raiser to the British GP at Silverstone.

New Zealander Stanaway headed Englishman Yelloly by 2.7 seconds at the flag, and Yelloly in turn was 5.0 seconds clear of his nearest challenger. Meanwhile, Status GP’s Mexican rookie Alfonso Celis Jr made sure that all three of the team’s drivers finished in the top 10. Stanaway also scored the two bonus points for fastest lap.

Stanaway got a good start from second on the grid to take the lead immediately, as Yelloly, from fourth in the starting line-up, launched himself up to third.

The leading trio ran very close for the opening lap, before Yelloly pulled off a great move on Carlin driver Emil Bernstorff around the outside of the Brooklands left-hander on lap two to take second place.

Yelloly stayed close to Stanaway for a while, before Stanaway consolidated his advantage and Yelloly in turn pulled away from Bernstorff.

The win moves Stanaway closer to the leading duo in the GP3 Series points table, in third position, and second place for Yelloly consolidates his sixth place in the championship. The one-two moves Status GP back up to second in the teams’ rankings.

Celis had a strong opening lap to move from 16th on the grid to 13th. Thanks to an incident ahead he moved into 11th, before passing Jann Mardenborough mid-race to take 10th spot, the best GP3 result to date for the 17-year-old.

The next round of the GP3 Series is in support of the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim on July 18-20.

Driver quotes:

Richie Stanaway
“I’m really happy, because it’s been a while – three years – since I won a race, so this is a good day. I had a good start, which is obviously what I needed from second on the grid, and that gave me a clear run into the first corner. I had to be really aggressive on the first lap to keep Bernstorff behind, but I managed to keep in front and then I got into a good rhythm from then onwards. The car was mega, and our consistency this year has been great – Nick and I are the only two drivers who have scored points in every race.”

Nick Yelloly
“A good one-two for the team, and it’s nice to see. I’m happy with that. I got a good launch off the line and I was hounding Bernstorff. I got a good run around the outside of Brooklands and sent it around the outside – one of the best moves I’ve done in my life! I pushed onto the back of Richie but if I got close I struggled with my tyres, so I chilled out and brought it home. We’ve made some really good improvements and I’m much more confident in the car. Also, I had to keep up my record of a podium every time I race at Silverstone in GP3!”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“A good result came out of it, so I’m happy. I did make a lot of mistakes, but finally to finish a weekend without issues, without crashes and without penalties is a very positive thing! There are a lot of things that could have been better so we have to keep working, and have a look at the data. As long as we continue to learn then I hope to be in a position to get my first points in Germany.”
