2014 NHRA: No Worries For Arana Jr After Early Exit In Norwalk

With high expectations heading into Sunday's final eliminations, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana Jr. came up short of bringing home back-to-back wins during the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.

On paper, the Lucas Oil Buell's 6.873 at 196.13 mph would typically advance on to the next round over Jim Underdahl's 6.905 at 195.34 mph. Unfortunately, Arana had a .147 reaction time, leaving him too much ground to make up down the lane and ultimately falling to Underdahl in the first round of eliminations.

"I just had a brain lapse on the line," Arana said. "I guess I decided I needed to take a nap. I don't really know what was going on in my head but it's alright, it's something I can work on myself. I'll just go back to the shop and sit on the practice tree as much as possible before the next race.

"You can't relive what happened. I just need to regroup, come back to the next race, and start all over again fresh."

The oldest Arana son wasn't too worried though when his Norwalk weekend ended earlier than expected. After capturing his first win of the season last weekend in Chicago, he is confident about the direction that Arana Racing is heading after a rough start to their season.

"We struggled the first two qualifying sessions Friday," Arana said, "but then we were able to recover and get everything dialed in and running pretty well. In situations like this, we turn our focus to the bikes we have left in the event and hope that they can go some rounds."

Arana will continue his championship chase by focusing on the next race on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule, the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, July 18-20, at Bandimere Speedway in Denver.
