Competition is open to tiremakers in Lucas Oil racing. Goodyear, the best-known tire brand in auto racing, takes on all comers in the sportsman categories.

Sal Biondo won in Stock Eliminator, Mike Strasburg won in Top Alcohol Dragster and Philip Smida took home the Super Gas trophy in NHRA Lucas Oil Racing Series competition. Combined with Goodyear’s three wins in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for professional teams, Goodyear-equipped cars the most races at Norwalk among tiremakers, six.

Biondo, of Middle Village, New York, is a member of the famed Biondo racing family which has won over two generations in several NHRA categories. Driving a 2010 Ford Mustang with a pair of Goodyear D4457 tires with 50 runs on it, Biondo won his 18th national event victory overall and his second in Stock Eliminator.

“That tire sends us up in the air,” Biondo said with a smile, describing the wheel stands his car did all weekend. “You hit (the throttle) and you go up in the air.”

The D4457 measures 30 inches tall and nine inches across the tread face. It mounts on a 15-inch wheel. Goodyear’s D-4B tread compound is part of the construction.

Smida’s win was his fourth in national event racing. The Canfield, Ohio resident drives a Chevrolet Cavalier with a set of Goodyear’s D1408 tires on the rear.

“It works flawlessly,” Smida said of the D1408. “It does not shake. You get great burnouts.”

The D1408 measures 32 inches in height and 16 inches across the tread surface. It is designed for 15-inch wheels. The tread compound is Goodyear’s D-5.

Mike Strasburg, of Lindon, Utah, collected his first national event victory and did it driving for Ynot Racing, which is owned by two-time former world TAD champ Jim Whiteley. The victory came on Goodyear’s D2922 tire which, the team has used since it was introduced.

“When you’re driving a championship car, you can win,” Strasburg said with a grin.

The D2922, which is used by winning teams in both Alcohol categories and in Pro Mod, measures 34.5 inches tall and 17 inches across the width of its tread. It mounts on a 16-inch wheel and has Goodyear’s D2F tread compound in the construction.

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
