Team Peugeot-Hansen Continue To Show Strong Speed At Holjes

Swedish based World RX squad Team Peugeot-Hansen once again proved a strong pace at their home round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Holjes, Sweden in front of a record crowd of over 35, 000 spectators at the famous venue.

Double European Rallycross champion Timur Timerzyanov finished top of the order at the end of day one after two heats, the Russian driver the fastest of all in heat two. Timerzyanov finished third at the Intermediate Classification, with team mate Timmy Hansen in eighth. Unfortunately for the team, despite having the speed, neither driver would make it through to the final, Hansen being forced to stop with engine problems while Timerzyanov had a spin.

Timur Timerzyanov: “Day one went well, I was fastest after two heats.”

Reigning European Rallycross Champion Timur Timerzyanov beat Sweden event winner Mattias Ekstrom on day one, and third at the end of the heat stages, but was unable to make it through to the final following a spin. The Russian driver feels there is work to do, but isn’t lacking in motivation to win for Red Bull and Peugeot as soon as possible.

“Day one went well, I was fastest after two heats. I really like the circuit at Holjes, it’s a challenging track. We had some problems over the weekend, and I made a mistake in the semi final. We need to do a lot of work before the event in Belgium next week, I really hope we can challenge for victory soon.”

Timmy Hansen: “We weren't absolutely the fastest here, but yet again we have proved we have the pace.”

Racing in his home country, Timmy Hansen knows the Holjes circuit well and set competitive lap times during the heats, despite spending most of his races stuck in traffic. Hansen started fourth in semi-final two with eyes on making it to the final, only to be ruled out by engine failure on the third lap.

“I really, really wanted to do well at Holjes. In the heats, nothing seemed to go our way really, when you are third in the race and in the bumper of the car in front it is very frustrating, but we were eighth at the Intermediate stage and we all know that in the semi-final in Holjes, anything can happen. I made a good start, but after two laps I got some alarms about the engine so I had to stop. We weren't absolutely the fastest here, but yet again we have proved we have the pace, it’s such a shame that we haven't been able to show that with a top result yet. Next weekend we go to a brand new track in Belgium, with a clean sheet of paper for everybody.”

Kenneth Hansen: “We have had quite a good weekend but we couldn’t really use the car to its full potential”

Team Peugeot-Hansen principle Kenneth Hansen feels that the full potential of the 208 WRX was not extracted at Holjes for a variety of reasons, but that at least one car could have been in the final, had it not been for a spin for Timerzyanov and an engine problem for Hansen.

“We have had quite a good weekend but we couldn’t really use the car to its full potential because of some technical problems, mainly with Timmy’s car. Timur made a mistake in the semi-final, I’m confident that without that he could have been in the final and it would have been a different story, but sometimes these things happen in Rallycross. The team was not able to run at full capacity this weekend, we have some power unit issues that we need to solve for next weekend, which hopefully we can do and come out fighting in Belgium. It will be interesting to go to a new track, there are a lot of good teams now in the championship, it will be all about who can set their cars up the fastest and we are one of the teams best equipped to do that.”

The FIA World Rallycross Championship heads to Mettet in Belgium next weekend, for the first of five new circuits for 2014 (12th - 13th July). Belgium is a country steeped in rallycross history, and home to some of the most knowledgable rallycross fans in the world, where Team Peugeot-Hansen will continue to challenge for their first podium finish of the season.
