2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey Summit Racing NHRA Nationals Event Recap: First Round

For the second consecutive NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender dragster team had their day end far too soon.

After qualifying in the top half of the 16-car eliminations field for the fourth consecutive NHRA event, the Battery Extender team came up short in a close drag race in the first round of Sunday's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara tuned Massey to a 3.778-second lap, three-hundredths better than their best qualifying time, but it wasn't enough to beat Brittany Force's 3.753.

"We were just on the wrong end of a close drag race," Spencer said. "Unfortunately it happens and unfortunately that's two first-round losses in two weeks for us.

"It's disappointing, there's no way around that. We just got outrun. We made a great pass, but she made a greater lap. It is what it is."

It was the third first-round loss in 13 NHRA Mello Yello events this season for the Battery Extender team.

"I have all the confidence in this team that we'll bounce back and go rounds in two weeks when we get to Denver."

The Don Schumacher Racing team will travel back to Brownsburg, Ind., for an off weekend before kicking off the Western Swing at Denver in two weeks.

The Battery Extender team fell back one spot to fifth in NHRA Top Fuel standings after the northern Ohio event.

Massey is the defending event champion of the scenic Mile-High Nationals.
