But the 2012 Funny Car world champion was almost glowing when he took his Valvoline MaxLife Dodge Charger R/T into the semifinals against Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps in the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio,

Although Capps' time of 4.126 seconds at 311.34 mph edged Jack, the Valvoline driver was pleased that his team's win in the first round enabled the crew led by Rob Flynn to move into the top-10 in standings after 13 of 24 races in the series.

"We just got outrun there by the NAPA team," Jack said.

Jack's semifinals appearance was only the second time he advanced beyond the second round and it comes on the heels of three straight first-round losses that dropped him out of the top-10 that will determine the field for six-race Countdown to the Championship that begins after the next five events.

"I'd call it a good progress weekend," said Jack, who qualified No. 8. "Obviously we really wanted to win the race and have a chance at getting a Wally (trophy). We made a lot of good runs this weekend.

"Obviously if we're going to run for the championship we have to be in the Countdown. We have to make a move to be solidly in the top-10. We got back in Sunday and now we have to keep it and start moving up.

"I'm very optimistic moving forward. We have a bunch of races in a short period of time."

The event at Norwalk marked the end of a four-race, four-week swing. The Mello Yello Series is off next weekend and starts the three-race Western Swing July 18-20 with the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Denver.
